DMAN -> Bearing type clarification (3/12/2019 11:28:13 AM)

Hi all,

To clarify, in the formation editor, "relative bearing" means an escort placed at that point will "float" around the HVU it's protecting, and "fixed bearing" will have the escort maintain it's position regardless of the manoeuvring of the HVU.

Do I understand this correctly?

yes. If fixed it will maintain a fixed bearing and distance from the Lead, trying to comply with the leads maneuvers.

Think of it from two applications of the bearing mode. If you have a fleet, you may want your best ASW ship to sail at the front of the formation to find potential submarines ahead of the other ships. You would set them to relative bearing, so if the fleet turns, the ASW ship stays at the front. You also have threats from enemy SSM batteries, so you could give your best point defense ships on a fixed bearing towards the SSM batteries so they stay between them and the rest of the fleet even if the fleet turns.
