In one of my PBEM games as Japan I just had an Allied sub attack ships unloading in Hankow!! It will be interesting to see if I can trap that rascally rabbit. This sort of suicide would be something from a John Wayne movie...depth of channel, shifting shallows, not enough room for torpedo to arm etc, etc I half hope sub gets away so my opponent tries more of such stunts!!!

Henkow, today known as Wuhan, is the largest population city in China and situated by the Yangtze River. In one game I
bombarded the city regularly with destroyers, replenishing in a near-by city in my hands with a 4-star port. Quite gamey,
really. But a sub could go there.

Sounds legit, especially if it’s called HMS Thames or similar!

The USS Barb under the command of Commander Fluckey did it:

quote:

. . . On 22–23 January Barb penetrated Namkwan Harbor now called Yanpu Wan on the China coast, opposite the Matsu Islands, and wrought havoc upon a convoy of some 30 enemy ships at anchor. Maneuvering in dangerously shallow waters, Barb launched her torpedoes into the enemy group and then retired at high speed on the surface in a full hour's run through uncharted, heavily mined, and rock-obstructed waters. In recognition of this outstanding patrol, Commander Fluckey was awarded the Medal of Honor and Barb received the Presidential Unit Citation.

That must be where the expression “fluckey “ came from.
