PaxMondo -> Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 12:45:03 AM)

Anyone here employed at the Smithsonian? Going to be out in DC area 2nd week of May.

mdanz -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 3:19:52 AM)

Put your real picture up
LOL

spence -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 3:35:26 AM)

I suspect she's hoping some guy will let her in through an emergency exit.

PaxMondo -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 3:51:20 AM)

Nah, family trip to DC. 9 yo son wants to see Smithsonian, and I seem to recall someone from here worked there. Was hoping to meet up.

zuluhour -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 11:25:41 AM)

I live close by but think I have a golf tourney that weekend. I would say you MUST visit
the adjunct to the Air and Space museum. It's called the Udvar Center I believe. About
30min outside DC. Their collection is AMAZING! They have among other things: space shuttle
satellites and capsules, aircraft from all periods including a mock up of the bridge on a
fast carrier (Big E?), IJN and USN gun sights, several of the Pratt and Whitney engines,
jets including a Blackbird. and a really cool selection of WWII fighters including rare
IJ a/c, Enola Gay, German Arado (sp?) etc etc. In fact if I am not playing golf that weekend
and your party can all fit into an Accord, I'd taxi you out there.

ps. Just a note here, should you except the free taxi ride, NO BALD jokes (I'm sensitive),
must endure "long hair" music (I listen to symphony music most of the time) and no calling
me grandpa. [:D][:D]

pss. Looks like I play the weekend of the 5th (May) Saturday and Sunday if I qualify and the 13th
which is a match play event (long day)

psss I have visited a few times and would like to photograph some more exhibits. I know SuluSea
is around here somewhere and a couple others.....

zuluhour -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 11:52:51 AM)

CR is around here somewhere to.....

mdanz -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 2:44:09 PM)

She's obviously a Chinese agent!!!
First the Smithsonian!!
THEN.... the WORLD......
All because of an older guy who's self conscious about his music preferences...
what a shame..

Lokasenna -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 3:36:21 PM)

The mock up of the bridge of a carrier is not at Udvar-Hazy, but at the main Air and Space Museum on the Mall. Udvar-Hazy is entirely aircraft of various kinds, rockets, and space stuff. Some weapons and engines. They also have a restoration hangar that you can view from above...

Definitely recommend the Navy Memorial as well. It's a bit hidden - from the large open-air memorial with the masts and global map (and all the bronzework fountains around it), look to the north side of it. On the right side of the walkway leading north is the museum itself. Lots of ship models.

zuluhour -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/29/2019 3:44:04 PM)

You are correct on the carrier mock up, and the gun sights are in the Mall section as well. The Udvar
does have a ton more WWII a/c and engines. I shared a bunch of photos from there two AARs ago. Really
the WWII a/c at the mall you miss at the Udvar are the 109, Zero, FM1 (or 2) Wildcat, 262, and the SBD and Spit.
to my recollection. The Udvar is massive. There are two main halls and tons of space to check out the
exhibits. In the mall is assholes and elbows, harder to enjoy. reminds me of the first time I heard the line
in the army "tighten up the line, make your buddy smile".

zuluhour -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/30/2019 11:26:20 AM)

some low res images from Udvar..........never mind files to large

zuluhour -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/30/2019 11:29:35 AM)

how about now?

OK that was @ 10$ and copied into a JPEG, really low res

PaxMondo -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/30/2019 2:11:04 PM)

mdanz - you should be aware that an avatar photo does not necessarily reflect the gender or nationality of the user.
PaxMondo is not female nor (I think) Japanese like the avatar.
You may also see a board name "Barb" who is not a woman named Barbara, but a male from Poland or nearby country.

Canoerebel -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/30/2019 3:43:10 PM)

BBfanboy isn't a male. He's a gender fluid Icelandic shepherd given to reading Arabic free verse and working on a doctorate in ancient thought.

GI Jive -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/30/2019 4:57:46 PM)

Also at Udvar-Hazy: A Space Shuttle, an SR-71, and the prop model of the Mother Ship used in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Might be cool for a 9 yo. There's also a lot more elbow room at Udvar-Hazy.

bradfordkay -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (3/30/2019 6:22:51 PM)

Kids that age love the Museum of Natural History on the mall. I would not deprive them of that experience. I'd budget one day at the mall and another for the satellite air museum (Udvar-Hazy sounds like some place in Mongolia - how did it get its name?).

[:D] At my age, the doctorate in Ancient thought is a cinch! And the rumours about me and sheep are all lies! My mother was Irish, not Scots! I did spend about 45 minutes in Iceland once, though.
And I spent six months in Egypt, Israel and Syria but my mastery of Arabic stopped at the numbers one to five. Fortunately, shouting loudly in English while doing pantomime gestures was sufficient to communicate with most Arabs. They are amazingly patient when you have money to spend!
And there is no 'gender fluidity' going on - I can still see my equipment unless I just came out of cold water ...

Ancient thought, is that what I used to do when I was young, or what I do now?

With lots of easter eggs hidden on it. I didn't find them all and I've seen it three times.

PaxMondo -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (4/1/2019 2:50:51 AM)

We're in town because my wife has a committee meeting. We're staying near Dupont Circle (forget which hotel now). We're there one week. One day at Anapolis. One day doing the Lincoln/Washington Memorial area. One day Library of Congress. One Day Smithsonian, or maybe two. That's the skeleton of the plan.

We did Boston last fall, Harvard, MIT, USS Constitution, Freedom Trail, … he loved it. got to use his latin.
Lobster rolls; his first time having lobster, he loved it. Had'em 3 times. [;)]

Looking forward to softshell crab sandwich, been years since I had one.

Lokasenna -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (4/1/2019 5:32:19 PM)

You may want to get the crabcake sandwich in Annapolis. Not sure I've had a great one in DC, but if I go in to DC for food it's typically non-American fare (or brewpub, in which case burger/bbq and beer). Depending on how you get up to/back from Annapolis, a place in my 'hood called Franklin's (http://www.franklinsbrewery.com/) is a great local brewery with great food. Their crabcake sandwiches (or even just crabcakes, or crab dip) are good. I just always get one of the stupendous burgers instead - only place out here with burgers that rival those I got in Iowa.

PaxMondo -> RE: Smithsonian, DC (5/17/2019 7:52:46 PM)

Finishing up a great week in the DC area.
Kurt (zuluhour) was a great host. Spent a remarkable day at Udvar Hazy. Got a lot of great shots of engines. [:D][:D][:D]

Oh, and also analytic gear.

Hope I have the opportunity to return the favor ….

From the looks of that emoji, it looks like he just came out of the Red River of the North just after ice out.
