Dear all,

I am starting a little wargaming club in my area. I am currently curating the selection of the games and I wanted to add at least one game that involves Pacific.

I have 2 options so far,

First one is War in the pacific/DG Decisions, second edition. Has some played this boardgame and can compare it with "our" game ? in terms of detail ? How does industry ie production , shipbuilding etc ? compare. Can you micro-manage certain types of fighters / ships etc ? It seems huge and maybe even playable as a one person game so I am really inclined to buy this.

Second one is a far far smaller one, called Empire of the Sun/GMT games, I believe it is more strategical and maybe a better fit for shorter time slots and beginners. But then again, how does it compare it to WITPAE in terms of scope and mechanics.

If you have any other advice as a pacific war option, you are more than welcome...

i like GMT and Empire of the Sun is on my wishlist.

right now i play compass pacific tide

which is probably too simplistic but works in a pinch.

if you have steam, you can get tabletop simulator and empire of the sun is free in the workshop. thats how i check out games before i buy. i'm in the process of reading the rules and such. looks quite nice. certainly a step up from pacific tide.

and my favorite naval pacific is silent victory and sister atlantic sub games, the hunters & the hunted. its a solo sub ww2 US vs. Japan. has 7 US subs you can take on missions and quite realistic...it will eat up your time. fairly easy system too.

Been many years since I indulged in a board wargame, but was completely addicted to them for decades as my 150+ game collection can attest.

One of the best strategic level Pacific games I enjoyed thoroughly was Advanced PTO:

Played them all.

Honestly Pacific war in the best. By victory games. Older title and you can find copies on eBay <$100. Get it. Elegant design, detailed and playable. Go on consimworld to get house rules by Marcus Stumpher (sp?). Makes game even better.

War in the Pacific has some design issues and clunky rules, but still a good game. Slowest playing off all.

Empire sun is well done game but larger scale less detail.

By them all and play them all.

Try Pacific Victory (get the 2nd edition), a wooden block game that captures fog of war pretty well. Low on hex and counter, it is quick and dirty and can be completed in 2-4 hours.

My choice as well. Then again I haven't played most of the other titles mentioned in this thread.
