Jan 5 China The IJA attack at Pakhoi (tanks only) at 1:2 was ineffective, and the Chinese counterattack at 1:1 also did nothing - final result - IJA 1 KIA, 12 disablements; Chinese 5 KIA, 18 disablements. The Chinese runners from Nanyang got across the river to the SW, and relative safety. The IJA will not pursue. Three of the IJA divisions will now move south to join the attack around Changsha. The IJA attack at Loyang was also 1:2, but disabled a lot of Chinese. Reinforcements joined our stack, so we'll try again. The Chinese attack at Kanhsien was 1:2, so our forts remain at 1, and he suffered many more disablements than we did, and some RGC reinforcements will arrive tomorrow (not that that means much). Jan 6 continued Logistics On Dec 7 the Japanese economy produces oil equal to about half of their refinery capacity. Until this ratio gets up to at least 75%, I do not repair damaged refineries - why spend the supply to fix it when there is not enough oil flowing to keep it in full operation. I realize Japan starts with an oil stockpile, and shouldn't run out for at least a year. So, I've delayed refinery repairs by 30 days (at Miri only, as Palembang sustained no damage and Medan was just captured). Anyway, with the capture of Samarinda, the ratio of oil production to refinery demand passed 75%. Jan 9 Short report for today. Maiana flipped. Manado captured and defenders surrendered having no retreat route. Medan oil and refinery fully repaired (only had 2 damage each). I've decided to gradually increase HI - these 7 bases will increase HI by 10 each - Bangkok, Saigon, Canton, Changchun, Harbin, Port Arthur, and Fukuoka. IJA troops will cross into Singapore tomorrow. Chinese forces now show withdrawal from Kanshien and from around Ichang, although these may be only partial withdrawals. The Chinese defensive line in front of Changsha will get its first test tomorrow.

Jan 11 Talasea captured unopposed; IJA troops land at Gasmata and Ternate. Iloilo flipped (no damage to resource). Manila's RSY now at 30, and no plans to increase it. The 2 Ha-44 sites are now at 30(0) with 15% R&D. So, if my math is correct, research should advance a month on or about Feb 25. In other news, the bombardment at Singapore disclosed Allied AV at only 255. I could be wrong, but with 1690 Japanese AV and a replenished supply situation, the time is ripe for the coup de grace. In China, movements are proceeding as previously discussed, with a lot of movement to the rear by Chinese units.

Jan 14 Sumatra Oosthaven was captured with little opposition and the defenders surrendered. Up at Benkoelen, 33 Div/B starts loading transports to assault Padang. While farther north, IG Div/A is about to enter Sibolga. China Changsha was reinforced by both sides. Bombardments will continue for the foreseeable future. Thailand Two Allied units have marched from Burma to Chiang Mai, but have not attacked. Two Royal Thai Army divisions are now there defending with level 1 forts, and more reinforcements will rail in over the next days. I fail to see the point of this little "offensive"; those units would be better used defending somewhere in Burma, in my opinion. Engines All six Ha-45 sites are now at 30(0) and 50% research. So, research should increase by 6% daily and move forward one month in 8+ days. Then, another month every 17 days.

Jan 15 Another slow day while I start thinking about the invasion of Java. IJA troops landed at Roxas and Donggala, and captured Gorontalo unopposed. The Dutch mines were cleared from Balikpapan harbor and the oil and refinery facilities were put back in 100% operation after sustaining very minor damage during the occupation. My plan is to kick off the invasion of Java on or about Feb 1. Before that happens I'll need to reassemble Kido Butai at Balikpapan, along with all of the operational BBs. Transports are already nearby. 18 Div and 56 Div will land at Semarang with tanks and other support coming from Singapore. These TFs will show Batavia as the destination and an empty amphib TF will feint toward Batavia. 38 Div and 2 Div will land at Tjepoe with tanks and other support coming from Balikpapan and other ports around Celebes. These TFs will show Makassar as the destination. The landings will occur 2 days apart (more or less); probably Tjepoe first. The tank regiments will cross the island cutting it in half, and the Dutch defenders at Soerabaja and Batavia will then be defeated in detail. As the Chinese continue to show withdrawal from around Ichang, I'm about ready to cut lose the IJA troops there toward Changteh to the southwest.

Jan 18-19 Nadzab and Dagua flipped. IJA troops landed at Tandjoengselor, Madjene, and Taliaboe on the 18th and captured same on the 19th. The Allied defenders at Tandjoengselor, who had retreated from Tarakan when it was captured, surrendered. The other 2 were vacant. Arawe and Padang were captured on the 18th. Ningsia and Sibolga were captured on the 19th. An aerial bombing campaign against Batavia has begun, along with recon of all the surrounding bases. Hopefully, my Allied opponent will think the Java hammer will fall at that end of the island. In China, the surrounded 50th Chinese Corps finally surrendered, freeing up some small units to join the pursuit. Jan 20 will see the first deliberate attack at Changsha, intended to be a recon by fire to see what the fort level is at. I don't expect to be able to capture the place quickly, unless, of course, he decides to withdraw. What I hope to do is block it with an economy of force and cut off the Chinese units around Kukong, or compel them to retreat west, instead of north. At Singapore, 5th and 18th Divisions have begun loading transports at Singapore; 4th Division (also at Singapore) is split to capture Bengkalis, Tandjoengpinang, and Singkep. 4th Div will be the reserve for the Java invasion. IJA troops land at Tandjoengpinang, Singkep, Lae, and Namlea on the 21st. IJA troops capture Pingsiang from 2 defending Chinese HQs; minor (2) damage to the resources. IJA troops also capture San Jose and the 61 PA Division and base force surrender. 5 Div departed Singapore on the 20th for Bandermasin (showing Batavia as the destination). I want that base right across the Java Sea for a rearm/refuel outpost during the Java operation, especially the initial landings. 18 Div departed Singapore on the 21st for Semarang (showing Batavia as the destination). 38th Div departed Balikpapan on the 21st for Tjepoe, with an at sea destination near Balikpapan. Kido Butai is reforming with 6 CV, 2 CVL, and a CS enroute from Talaud-eilanden to Balikpapan. When KB is in position in about 3 days the Java landings will occur. In China, a deliberate attack at Changsha on the 20th reduced forts from 4 to 3. A few units from that attack will withdraw east to recover and reposition as other reinforcements arrive.

On the 23rd, IJA troops landed at Gebe, Soebi-besar, and Bandjermasin. Vacant Gebe was captured by shock attack. 5 Div, at almost full strength, will have no difficulty capturing Bandjermasin. Aviation support and several AKE are enroute. KB attacked Makassar airfield as part of the illusion that it is the next target. Land-based bombers from Palembang continue to hit the Batavia airfield. The invasion of Java begins tomorrow when 18 Div arrives at Semarang, followed by 38 Div's landing at Tjepoe the next day. KB will take position just off Bandjermasin. Continuous search over Java has detected no Allied capital ships. Neither of these invasion TFs has been detected, although KB has been (due to the air attack on Makassar?) Paratroops will land at Watampone and Kolaka (on Celebes) tomorrow, and also reinforce Namlea. In China Over the past few days several Chinese movements have been defeated. In the north, a shock attack across the river by a corps and HQ suffered heavily, followed the next day by a counterattack by 37 Div/C pushing the Chinese back north. Near Sinyang, 2 Chinese Corps spent a week (+?) marching west out of the woods, only to be attacked by 116 Div and forced to retreat back into the woods. Their supply must suck after all that marching! At Pingsiang, a Chinese Corps moved west into Pingsiang, only to be attacked by 22 Div and forced to retreat back east, as that was the only hexside controlled by the Allies. Farther south, 104 Div has blocked the minor road west from Kukong to Kweilin. If they hurry the Chinese forces around Kukong may be able to escape north to Hengyang. Jan 24 Java 18 Div unloaded at Semarang, defended by a KNIL Rgt and 1 other unknown unit. Tanks, artillery, and aviation support are enroute; one TF will arrive and unload tomorrow, others up by Ketapang should arrive in 2 days. 38 Div will unload at Tjepoe tomorrow. Various support ships (AKE, AD, AG) and fuel will arrive at Bandjermasin in a day or 2; the base was captured by 5 Div without any difficulty (or casualties). The 2 Dutch defenders surrendered. KB, near Bandjermasin, found so few naval targets that the vast majority of its Vals and Kates bombed the Dutch LCU at Bandjermasin. Dutch bombers caused minor damage to our transports, but none sank (yet). LRCAP over the transports was ineffective, as they were set at 20k and his bombers came in around 5k - so there wasn't even combat - they have been lowered to 5k and 10k for tomorrow. 4 Div (to be floating reserve) is reloading at Singkep and Tanjoengpinang. 5 Div will reload at Bandjermasin when aviation support arrives. Elsewhere Mussau Is. flipped. 21 Div/C unloaded at Tacloban and will attack tomorrow. Soebi-besar, Sawahloento, Watampone, and Kolaka were all captured. Only Sawahloento was defended. Watampone and Kolaka (both on Celebes) were captured by paradrop from Samarinda and Manado, respectively.

Jan 25 Java 18 Div captured Semarang (no damage to resource or light industry) and the defenders retreated to Djokjakarta to the SW. While the base is fortified and aviation support arrives, 14 Tank Rgt and 56 Recon Rgt will head SW to capture Djokjakarta. An infantry regiment and artillery will follow; another infantry regiment will head SE to Soerakarta. 38 Div unloaded at Tjepoe, found it vacant, and will capture the base tomorrow. The 2 tank regiments that unloaded with 38th will move to capture Madioen. When 5 Div arrives from Bandjermasin in a few days, 5 and 38 Divs will advance on Soerabaja, while 18 Div and elements of 56 Div advance on Batavia. Units of 2 Div will also be arriving piecemeal, and will be the principal defenders of Java when the rest leave for other duties (after the island is secure). Elsewhere Lihir flipped as IJA troops landed on the island. IJA troops landed at Waigao, Tawi Tawi, Saidor, and Terempa; all are vacent. Repair of Singapore's repair shipyard has been paused at 15 while supply is shipped out to support the operations on Java. At Shortlands, a TF led by CL Kitakami, escorting an amphib TF carrying 83 NG for the island, was virtually wiped out by a US TF consisting of 3 heavy cruisers. CA Houston took a torpedo and has been reported sunk, but that's not likely. The amphib TF was also destroyed. Jan 27 Java The IJA attack at Djokjakarta with just tanks was unsuccessful, but with infantry and artillery reinforcement it should achieve victory tomorrow. Also, with Soerakarta being occupied by IJA, the Dutch at Djokjakarta will be forced to retreat toward Tjilatjap. IJN lost a DMS to a Dutch sub at Semarang as reinforcements unloaded. However, carrier Vals and Kates attacking Soerabaja port sank 2 Dutch subs in retaliation. China A deliberate attack at Changsha reduced forts from 3 to 2, and the Chinese suffered slightly more casualties then the IJA units. Two Chinese units are moving to reinforce Changsha, making coming attacks south of the city more important, especially the one just SE of Changsha. With control of that hex IJA units in Changsha can move out to the SE and reinforce attacks south the the city, while leaving a small(ish) holding force behind. The yellow circles on the map below highlight points of attack over the next several days. The IJA forces involved are not large, but the Chinese units under attack are already in poor shape. Jan 28 Java Merak flipped!? The Allies hold Batavia in force, adjacent to Merak. The IJA controls Oosthaven, across the strait. So why would Merak flip? Anyway, Djokjakarta was captured and the defenders retreated toward Tjilatjap. There was damage to neither resources nor light industry. The infantry regiment and artillery will follow; the tanks will prepare to rail to Madioen, then run down the east end of Java below Soerabaja. 5 Div, by brigades, will sail from Bandjermasin to Tjepoe, the first wave tomorrow. 18 Div started the trek to Batavia; 38 Div started the advance on Soerabaja. CarDivs 1 and 2 under Yamaguchi leave the Java Sea to replenish in Balikpapan before heading to Rabaul. CarDiv 3 under Nagumo stays behind to patrol the Java Sea. 4 Div has been released from its floating reserve mission to support the Java conquest, and has been assigned to 14 Army to complete the conquest of the Philippines. Philippines 21 Div(-) landed on Cebu, defended by a PA Div and base force. Once Cebu is captured, only Bataan will remain in Allied hands.

Jan 29 Java Soerakarta flipped (would have been captured by the resident infantry regiment anyway). Madioen was captured by 2 tank regiments, forcing the lowly Dutch base force to retreat toward Soerabaja. They will follow east, then move on Malang and other bases to the east. 14 Tk Rgt (now at Djokjakarta) will rail to Madioen to join them. 18 Div should be in Soerabaja in 3 days, while 5 Div unloads at Tjepoe to reinforce. Philippines Cebu was captured and the PA Inf Div and base force surrendered. The conquering bde of 21 Div will load up for Rabaul. Another bde of 21 Div is loading at Wenchow for the same destination. Elsewhere Some British/Indian (not sure which) unit that had been living in the jungle since Dec 8 moved back into Kota Bharu and was wiped out by attrition without being attacked. China Two bridgeheads east of Kukong and SE of Pingsiang were established as described in post #145 above. The critical attack is the hex SE of Changsha, which will allow IJA forces to move into Changsha from the SE and open that hexside for withdrawal of other units at Changsha currently. Jan 30 The 2 Chinese Corps at Tsiaotso finally marched out of the hex and it flipped; no damage to either LI or resource. IJA troops landed at Madang and Lolobato; both are vacant of Allied defenders. China The first attack on the hex SE of Changsha was 1:1 and the Chinese suffered more disablements than the IJA. But, now the Chinese stack is showing movement to the SW (to Pingsiang). Another Chinese unit moved into Pingsiang from the west, which will be attacked tomorrow. IJA will advance into Kukong in 2 days, but will only have 4 of 6 hexsides blocked, so the 9 Chinese units there will probably escape to the north. The 2 Chinese units that reinforced Changsha a few days ago were artillery and AA, so the AV didn't increase. Something at Changsha is showing movement to the SW, along with movement from Hengyang to the east, which is the clear terrain hex SW of Changsha. Changsha has been continually bombed for the past week, with some intermittent interference by an AVG squadron. Java One brigade of 5 Div is unloading at Tjepoe, and 38 Div is adjacent to Soerabaja. 18 Div is one hex closer to Tjilatjap. There has been no Allied naval interference with the invasion. Dutch bombing has greatly diminished, and 15 Zero CAP flies over both Semarang and Tjepoe. Batavia is continually bombed, weather permitting.
