I think I've figured out my problem. I simply suck at this game. [:(]

Sadly true for all of us to some relative degree.

The beast is simply too massive for anyone to master.

Once again , Thank you to everyone who's contributed to this thread and tried to help me. [&o] I think I've figured out my problem. I simply suck at this game. [:(]

Nahhh - you just haven't played it for enough decades yet! Think of it as continuous learning (as organizations now expect their managers to engage in). I'm sure you can be an excellent player in 20 or so years .... but so can your opponents!

Here's hexside control

[image]local://upfiles/37002/44E80A9FAA28455FA85115E13D3EEEB8.jpg[/image]

These screen captures are a bit of a shock. They are NOT exactly what I'm seeing. My brit units do not appear surrounded. I assumed that if you were engaged with enemy forces , you didn't need to recon them to see that there is someone there , only to see how much. That was a VERT poor assumption.

I'm also having some difficulty wrapping my head around the concept that you apparently can't disengage , and if you could , you can't move into an adjacent hex with small numbers and AV's of units. No fighting withdrawals allowed. Which explains why my "brilliant" plans of "fighting withdrawals" in the PI and Malaya didn't work. My guess is that I fell into the "WITP Trap". That is, this is a game not a simulation. Reality might not be modeled due to programing inabilities
.

You have to be diligent about keeping hex-side control open. Units can't conduct a fighting withdrawal when they're surrounded en masse. If you kept hex-side control of at least one road / trail going out of the hex, you could have withdrawn from that direction.

Don't be so hard on yourself. We constantly learn / forget / relearn / re-forget things in this game. Want an example of how not to do a Japanese Wake landing? I'm sure that AcePylut has all manner of commentary on his AAR about nuances of amphibious / shock attack warfare that I overlooked. [8|]

**** happens. Move on. Improvise, adapt and overcome.

Thanks Hans. What's it been since we all sat there eagerly waiting for this beast to come out? Ten years? I need to go back to school. [X(][:(]

It's kind of ironic. My mantra has been scout, scout and scout some more. I guess I'm finally starting to realize that means on land as well. [X(][:(][8|]

Strong flanks are a good thing. The enemy can grope them but that's about it.

Actually, at the time I was oblivious regarding the impending release and was rather put off by it because I had just started learning the Japanese side in WITP. My reaction was more like "damn" now I have to start all over relearning the Allied side.
Ten years later and I still have not made new foray to the dark side yet.

Yeah, the economy of the 'dark side' is a real bitch.

I'm still not 100% sure I haven't screwed the thing up in my current game. Won't know for sure for about 6-9 months more game time, as far as I can tell. That's about 9-12 months more of RL for me. After that come hell or high water I'm doing a PBEM. Heck if I wait much longer I could be dead before I start.[:D]

You'll be fine. The key is just do things slowly and watch trends. I don't really use tracker anymore and just do occasional screen shots to see what is trending where. It's not as precise, and I do love the detail of tracker, but I can get caught up in it for too long too.
