Big B -> Waltzing Matilda (4/14/2019 12:49:24 AM)

With love to our Australian members, this is I think one of the best renditions of Waltzing Matilda

And The Clancy Brothers with the Wild Colonial Boy (Australian)

It's not Waltzing Matilda, but I always though John McDermott's rendition of The Band Played Waltzing Matilda to be an absolutely beautiful song. He has some other great music about World War I, as well. As for the Irish Rovers and Clancy Brothers, I grew up in a Boston Irish household (grandparents are off the boat from Mayo/Donegal) and we'd listen to those bands all the time at home or in the car. I think I know all their songs by heart. Wild Colonial Boy is a great song.

Also, if any of you play Civilization 6, I love the in-game Australian theme that uses Waltzing Matilda.

American theme from Civ6 is nice too

I remember the song from way back when I watched the movie "On The Beach". Actually I probably learned it in the 4th grade but it struck a special nerve when I heard it in that movie which all but coincided with the Cuban Missile Crisis. My father worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and it was only 7 or 8 miles away. I was scared as heckby the idea that in any 20 minutes some Russian missiles might land that would turn everything I ever knew into a radioactive wasteland. When sung by the "doomed Australians" towards the end of that movie the song was really sad and ever since I have associated that song with that movie.

I like that one by John McDermott. I've had Eric Bogles version on my MP3 players for years. A lot different than other songs of the same name. Can't go wrong with The Irish Rovers. [:)]

JeffroK -> RE: Waltzing Matilda (4/14/2019 2:56:26 AM)

All covers!!!!

The original & the best.

Eric Bogle, Walhalla Folk Festival.

And their ghosts may be heard,
As they march by the billabong,
Who'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me??

pontiouspilot -> RE: Waltzing Matilda (4/14/2019 4:17:36 AM)

JeffroK -> RE: Waltzing Matilda (4/14/2019 4:47:49 AM)

The most haunting rendition anyway. Whenever I hear the name I immediately think of that film.

Buckrock -> RE: Waltzing Matilda (4/15/2019 8:26:03 AM)

I think the 1st Marine Division had an appreciation of it too. It's still supposed to be used as the official marching tune whenever they ship out.

jdsrae -> RE: Waltzing Matilda (4/15/2019 9:28:26 AM)

1st Marine Div picked up the tune when they were refitting in Melbourne after Guadalcanal, along with waltzing with our Matildas and her friends in the evenings

Trugrit -> RE: Waltzing Matilda (4/15/2019 12:51:21 PM)

Our whole class would sometimes sing this when I was in grade school in North Carolina.

I can still recall many of the verses.
