Veitikka -> Separating vehicles from dismounted units (4/15/2019 5:32:53 PM)

It's been suggested a few times that it should be easier to conduct a dismounted assault after the infantry units have exited their vehicles. Some discussion here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4602066

Our team brainstormed that perhaps instead of selecting vehicles/infantry there should be an option to detach all vehicles. That way the vehicles would be left behind and the remaining infantry units in the formation get the flag. Currently you can do this by stopping every vehicle manually, or by issuing them some other command.

One suggestion was that there should be an alternate shift+right-click menu or similar for this. I believe it would be hard to find for many players. I think this will be a fairly rarely used command, because it's limited to mechanized formations, so the command for it should not be in a very prominent place.

So, what do you think about these ideas, and where should the button for it be?

Yea, I like the old Tacops game where once inf are unloaded, it's treated as a separate unit.

It would be great if players & AI can pre-designate the movement direction and formation and etc before dismount, so that infantry can move right after dismount without delay.

I see that reg_reg proposed an idea on post #6 in the wishlist thread that would detach and regroup the infantry as its own platoon formation after dismount, is this a possibility? A plus is that the basic principle behind it can be applied to other units of the game also, such as allowing us the possibility to detach smaller formations from larger ones (detaching a platoon from a company, a section from a platoon) and allowing it to be operated(possibly at the cost of an order delay) as an independent formation selectable on the map, and then re-attached to its parent platoon/company later when needed.

Actually, it can be already done if you use right click "unload" command and then continue issuing orders. Infantry gets in front advancing while vehicles follow them nearby. With this function you would just drop the vehicles behind.

It would be enough to add new formations for the mechanized infantry:
- movement behind the vehicle
- movement in front of the vehicle
- movement only for infantry with the vehicle stationary.

Once given the movement command (of the single unit or section or of the whole group) it should be sufficient to select the specific formation and the infantry will automatically detach and following the new formation command.

The distance between the units and their positioning remains the same as previously selected (flag, line, etc.), and can be modified in the usual way.

Definitely useful. It would be even better if the vehicles would create a formation of their own while detaching.

As for button placement, as long as there’s a hotkey, I’m fine but since this is a command tied to units with unload capability should it not be similarly placed?

I'd definitely like to see this, the additional flexibility would be very useful.
