Dutch_slith -> My first PBEM (4/30/2019 8:48:35 AM)

We started in January 2017. After 2 years and 2 months, Japan won an automatic victory on January 1, 1945.

This was a stock scenario 1 match. Historical First Turn and PDU off, one day turns.

I cannot praise to highly the conduct and reliability of my honourable opponent Steve aka Wineguy.

We both made many mistakes, my win is due to some incredible luck and superior japanese damage management [;)]
Not once we had to discuss a gamey situation, it was a gentlemen's game.

Gentlemens games are the best!

Congratulations! But don't get too confident - I think I know why you won ...

Congrats on your win. More importantly, congratulations on successful completion of this behemoth. [&o]

Now see if you can replicate your results on 'Scotchguy' and 'THCchick'. [;)]

I think I want to play your allied opponent. Whatever the result a nice gentlemanly game leaves a much better feel than anything else. I'm lucky enough to be in game 3 or 4 versus the same Aussie opponent. He always plays Japan and does so very credibly. I am always tingling with anticipation when his turns show up. I am also in 2nd game with a fine Irishman living in London as well as a very steady Feld-marshall from Germany. I hope all that haven't take the plunge and make the time for a PBEM...it is much more interesting than AI. I guarantee you that once you had your way with an Aussie you will never go back!!

jdsrae -> RE: My first PBEM (5/1/2019 2:51:13 AM)

I wish I could throw myself into the “beat up an Aussie” pool but would probably have to divorce the wife, sell the kids and/or quit my job before being a reliable pbem opponent...

Yaab -> RE: My first PBEM (5/1/2019 7:28:58 AM)

Jesus, the Allied losses are staggering. I bet MacArthur died in repose, clutching his ceremonial pipe.

AleRonin -> RE: My first PBEM (5/4/2019 6:18:29 PM)

Anyhow, I just end my first PBEM too! "Coral Sea" [8D]

Yes I know it is a very small one but has been amazing anyway.

Thanks to BillBrown for his patience and congratulations for the victory!

My final assult on PM failed but we got eveything: air battles, carrier clash, surface combats, SS attacks, amphibious invasion, can't wait to play the big campaign! [:)]

Here the main naval losses:

jdsrae -> RE: My first PBEM (5/4/2019 10:46:10 PM)

Looks like it was a 3-4 day bar brawl in the Coral Sea!
I think I’ll try a smaller scenario pbem next time I take same leave

pontiouspilot -> RE: My first PBEM (5/5/2019 1:34:41 AM)

Holy crap!! Maybe that’s the problem with a small scenario....shoot the broadside for there she be gone in AM!!

BillBrown -> RE: My first PBEM (5/5/2019 2:46:38 AM)

In my wrap up email to Ale I included this paragraph:

As a general note, realize that playing a scenario is not the same as playing a long full war campaign scenario. You end up doing things in a Scenario
that you would not do in a long game. If this had been part of a full campaign scenario I would have just let you have PM with a much smaller
try at holding it. But in the scenario, who holds PM at the end usually wins the game. In a full campaign it is only a small base in New Guinea.
The scenarios are good for learning how to use your forces, just not grand strategy.

We have started game two, I am now Japan and he is the Allies.

AleRonin -> RE: My first PBEM (5/5/2019 7:42:15 AM)

Yes very limited time for lot of action, but for a newbie like me there are several things worthy to learn, very good intro.

jdsrae -> RE: My first PBEM (5/5/2019 8:54:56 AM)

Good point, the scenarios with limited number of days mean that they sometimes force you to commit to an “up the guts with plenty of smoke” style attack.
The Coral Sea scenario allows Japan only a few days for recon before they need to get the invasion force moving or they’ll run out of time.
Lots more crossing of fingers than in the grand campaign where you can be more deliberate with your use of time and a bit more cautious with moving amphib task forces near enemy carriers.
Think of the scenarios as being appointed the subordinate local commander and you have orders that must be achieved within the time constraint or else you’ll get one of those letters thanking you for your service.

Sounds like you have personal experience with those letters![X(][;)]

jdsrae -> RE: My first PBEM (5/5/2019 9:45:07 PM)

Haha not I, but MacArthur and Blamey dished out a few of those letters based on their expectations of what should have been happening between Port Moresby and Buna / Salamaua.

MacArthur and Blamey while sipping G&Ts on the deck of the Polo Club in Brisbane:
MacArthur: Why haven’t you captured Buna yet Thommo?
Blamey: The 39th are withdrawing in good order and we are building up Supply for an advance
MacArthur: WITHDRAWING?! WTF?! Attack now guddam it! Buna must be captured before happy hour finishes
Blamey: hmmm, the terrain and environment aren’t exactly conducive to that sort of timeframe
MacArthur: Just get it done, actually good idea, you’re on the next Dakota to PM to sort it out
Blamey: Rowell has it under control
MacArthur: not if he’s allowing units to withdraw he doesn’t. Get up there and capture Buna, it’s only 2 hexes from Port Moresby!
Blamey: but that middle hex is jungle rough with no road. I’ve not seen it personally but apparently the Owen Stanley’s have some big FO yarmas
MacArthur: hmm, my map doesn’t have a road either now you mention it *yells at staff officer* are you sure his is Scenario 1 stock?!
Staff officer: we are hearing reports of multiple tracks in that hex, known as the Kokoda Track
Blamey: sorry, did I mention I haven’t seen it personally yet? Anyway, I hear it’s more a few trails.
MacArthur: great a track. Where I come from you can drive along a track. Send in the tanks and heavy artillery!! Oh and your engineers, tell them to make the track / trail whatever it is into a proper road ASAP
Blamey: yes sir, I’ll fly up and give Rowell the good news personally, he’ll appreciate that
MacArthur: right that’s sorted, now who did we give 32nd Div to again? Bring him in I want to know why he hasn’t captured Buna yet either
