Since Lasers will soon be a deployed reality......

Does this mean in 20 years attack aircraft will be obsolete? I mean how do you penetrate a laser defended target on land or sea.

Multiple directions at once? Laser deflecting surfaces? Massive jamming to prevent defensive weapons lock on?

I currently edit add a laser turret to a Zumwalt class and the thing is the freaking king of the above water high seas! nothing gets through. I guess only saturation, i.e. 25 missiles from opposite beams is the best way but man, the things a monster.

And if you also add a HVAP mount (which I know is also hypo) now your knocking aircraft down from 50 miles out.

Is this realistic? I know it fun to do but I don’t understand how aircraft will ever win...

What say you all?

Brian

More stealth, swarms of disposable drones, longer range Griffin/SBD class small PGMs and basic R&D in ablative coatings and/or refractary ceramics (can you imagine the Warthog with a brick coating, Space Shuttle style?), are just the things than come to my mind.

Reality will probably be something completely different.

Lasers have already been deployed. The AFSB USS Ponce carried an experimental laser weapon system during its deployment in the Arabian Gulf.

Its unlikely to make attack aircraft obsolete, however, it will probably increase the number of weapons required to successfully attack a group of warships.

50 miles out is probably not realistic, but I have had some interesting experiences adding the same laser weapons system found on the Ponce to the Zumwalt and built some fun small boat attack scenarios.
