LMychajluk -> AIP Motor w/o Electric Motor (5/19/2019 4:47:37 PM)

In the attached scenario, the Type 214 sub has had its Electric Motor destroyed (by my own torpedo....was too close to the SSK, and took damage from the explosion!). The AIP motor is still fully operational, and has fuel. But, the sub seems to be dead in the water and unable to move. Should I be able to move using AIP propulsion?

If I am correct, the AIP system is like a fuel cell that generates electricity to run your motors rather than a mechanical system like diesel engines. If your motors are destroyed it doesn't matter how much electricity you generate....

Someone feel free to correct me on this.

I think you're right.

In my current play I use SSK against another submarine. Is it possible to turn on AIP manualy or how to force a sub to use AIP and not the battery?

If that's the case, then I guess it's OK. I wasn't sure if the AIP was a separate propulsion system.

Thanks!

A AIP system is a system that uses fuel cells using hydrogen and liquid oxygen carried onboard the submarine or a uncommon type of combustion engine called a Stirling Engine, that uses diesel fuel and liquid oxygen, to generate electricity. These are 1x1,5x2 m large boxes that generate somewhere on the order of 100 kW of electricity depending on type and model.

The electricity is used to load the battery although i guess there would be a system to disconnect the batteries if they become damaged and to be able to use the submarine even with a damaged battery.

Diesel Electric AIP submarines are then equipped with an electric motor which draws electricity from either the main diesel engine turning a generator, or the batteries or the AIP system.

So there is only one propulsion motor, an electric motor, but three ways to feed that motor with electricity in an AIP submarine. If the electric motor is destroyed, the submarine is dead in the water.
