If I am doing a naval invasion ship to island and the results of the die roll are -/- What does that mean for my units invading? Return to ship? All dead? I am unclear on this.

RAW:

The notional unit is treated like a normal unit for all purposes during
combat (...)
Resolve the combat normally. Any combat result (other than ‘-’)
destroys the notional defending unit.

Since you did not destroy the notional unit (or forced it to retreat or to be shattered) the hex is not emptied of enemy land units. Therefore all invading units are destroyed.
