AndySfromVA -> American Revolution (7/20/2019 10:03:29 PM)

I'm reading a terrific series of books by Rick Atkinson about the American Revolution. Most people don't realize that the war was more than Bunker Hill and Yorktown. It actually presented interesting strategic and tactical issues that came up in subsequent conflicts. For instance at what point does fighting a campaign that involves very long supply lines become virtually impossible, especially prior to the industrial revolution? Also how do you fight a professional army with untrained militia?

I'm looking for a strategic turn-based game that will help me explore these issues. I see that Matrix has two games that deal with this - Birth of America and For Liberty. Does anyone have any recommendations between these two games or any other PC games?

If you're willing to unplug, go look up Hollandspiele's excellent Supply Lines of the American Revolution games (there's 2)

If you want other start-level games, there's GMT's COIN game "Liberty or Death" but again, it doesn't have a power cord

i like For Liberty, but it can be a bit fiddly to get working right on windows 10 and for some systems it may not work at all properly.

i dont know what you think of John Tiller's style of games but there is this

I've never play For Liberty so I can't say much about it If you decide on Birth of America buy 'Wars in America'; it's actually BOA2. Lots of scenarios including The American Revolution, The French Indian wars and the War of 1812.

Differences between the 2 game include; For liberty is IGOUGO turn based with 'hexes' while WIA is WEGO and 'Area' movement. If you like the AGEod system WIA remains one of their best even though it uses their older system.

Here's a Youtube by Gilmer9999 of WIA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MZcE7ZGG18

Full disclosure I'm an AGEod fanboy so keep that in mind.

Edit: AGEod has continued to patch the game up to 1.10e well past the Matrix version of 1.04c

WIA 1.10e (it's near the bottom)

For Liberty is a good game - the problem with it is that it's an old game with old graphics, display and sound.

If you need those things to enjoy a game don't buy, but if you can still enjoy good old style games it fits the bill.

Ageod Wars of America ... great game ...

Lord North to King George III: "Your Highness the American Colonies are revolting."
King George III in reply: "I agree. They are a horrible lot."

Thanks for the advice.

Me too. I'm about 20% through "The British are Coming" and it's well done.

I'm interested in a computer game version that's worthy of the conflict, so thanks for bringing up this thread.

Since the American colonists at the time of Paul Revere's ride considered themselves to be British, I think that their cry would be more like "The Regulars are coming!"

While at one time they may have felt that way, the years immediately before the revolution saw a deterioration in the relationship for a variety of reasons. At the time of Revere's ride, there was a majority mistrust in the motives of the crown and colonists increasingly identified themselves as something other than "British" in the classic sense of the word. Once blood was shed at Lexington and Concord, this trend accelerated dramatically.

RangerJoe -> RE: American Revolution (7/24/2019 3:46:22 PM)

But, correct me if I am wrong, Paul Revere's ride occurred before the battles of Lexington and Concord.

Yeah, you're right. I guess my point was that, after Lexington and Concord, a general mistrust or Gentlemen's disagreement flipped overnight to unrepressed rage. A lot changed in that one day/night.

RangerJoe -> RE: American Revolution (7/24/2019 5:36:38 PM)

All it takes is one little thing to slightly irritate some people, then they go all irrational. The British did a little more than to slightly irritate the New Englanders.

RichG -> RE: American Revolution (7/25/2019 5:20:18 PM)

For any game about this war to be truly accurate it has to feature the brave Revolutionaries capturing the English airports....

If there was to be a new ARW game produced I'd like to see it include the efforts by the Dutch, French and Spain in the war also the possibility of other nations entering the war besides France.

What about the Germans (e.g., Hessians)? There was also talk in the beginning of the war about bringing in some Russians to fight for the British too.

Correct me if I am wrong. At the time the Hessians were introduced into the American Revolution conflict as mercenaries, most if not all of Germany (as most might see it) was City States, Greater Germany had not been created yet. As to Russia entering the conflict: I do not know about that? These days I'm finding it difficult to google on such matters, don't know why?

EDIT:
OK, just dug up this article: https://www.mountvernon.org/library/digitalhistory/digital-encyclopedia/article/hessians/

There are lots of Germans included in the Ageod "Birth of America" game.

Baron Friedriech von Riedesel (5:2:3)
Baron Wilhelm von Knyphausen (3:2:2)
von Loos (4:1:2)

(Strategic: Offensive: Defensive)

Caedmar -> RE: American Revolution (7/26/2019 7:22:42 PM)

On Steam there is a game Hold the Line, also available on Hexwar. Quite simple but suprisingly quite accurate historically. Playing rebel colonists you cannot smash the whole British army, only you can do is to make some casualties which lower enemy's morale. In my personal opinion - worth a look and know :)

Translated into English, wouldn't that be something like "From the toilet" if I am not mistaken.

Or y'know... you could go play the tabletop game of the same name that it's based on.
