It came as quite a surprise to read at PC Gamer that the rights to Master of Magic have been acquired by Slitherine.

I hope a true successor to one of the greatest titles in PC gaming history results from this.

If nothing else I'd be happy with an HD remaster of MoM [sm=innocent0001.gif]

Lobster -> RE: Master of Magic acquired by Slitherine (8/6/2019 2:06:37 AM)

Oh nice. I still have my cd. And rule book.

Thatīs great news! Thanks for sharing.

I would suggest, while we wait, to try Deity Empires...
https://store.steampowered.com/app/889080/Deity_Empires/

Itīs basically MoM, and the devs are constantly updating it.

Iam really enjoying this game. You can also use the graphics mods from Steams Workshop if you like, which do look a bit better, but I personally donīt mind the graphics.

I had the Official Guide, and I played it for a whole summer. I still have the original, and the DOSBox version. I agree: a "remastered" version with modern UI and graphics would be already great (meanwhile I now play Dominions, another masterpiece).

And, oh, a printed rulebook, with the spellbook included, would be the pinnacle of coolness. [8D]

^ Dominions is a great series as well. I really hope whatever Slitherine does with the IP gives Dominions a run for its money, would love to see more big-open sandbox fantasy 4x's in that vein.

You say that like there is some shortage of them

Of games that give Dominions and the original Master of Magic a run for their money? What 4x's can you name that even come close to either of those games? I'm not talking about just "fantasy 4x's in general"

ezzler -> RE: Master of Magic acquired by Slitherine (8/7/2019 6:29:50 PM)

master of orion 2.
OBVS.

RangerJoe -> RE: Master of Magic acquired by Slitherine (8/7/2019 6:56:16 PM)

I still play Master of Orion 2 and there is a webpage somewhere with updates and a way to play multiplayer . . .

Do you know Age of Wonders series?

The Age of Wonders series was and is very good. I considered Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic back in the day the closest gaming experience I had found to Master of Magic. But even it lacked that certain something that Master of Magic had.

And yes, I played the Master of Orion series and enjoyed them, particularly Master of Orion II. But neither of those is like Master of Magic for the simple reason they are set in space and not on an earthlike planet. And that's just for starters.

The bottom line is that no other game I have played has the unique qualities that Master of Magic has. It is my sincere hope that Slitherine releases a sequel to it worthy of its name.

berto -> RE: Master of Magic acquired by Slitherine (8/8/2019 6:05:37 PM)

I casually played Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic back in the day. Never played MOM, though.

Briefly, what are the "unique qualities" that make MoM so special?

julievijay -> RE: Master of Magic acquired by Slitherine (8/9/2019 11:04:26 AM)

I have it's CD.

Freyr Oakenshield -> RE: Master of Magic acquired by Slitherine (8/9/2019 2:44:26 PM)

Yeah great! But how about acquiring rights to the online version of Memoir '44 from Days of Wonder/Asmodee and rereleasing it in some reasonable form, stripped of their ridiculous monetization format? That would be even greater! [:D]

It's nostalgia, isn't it?

Why don't you try it and see for yourself?

Greybriar -> RE: Master of Magic acquired by Slitherine (9/6/2019 7:46:05 PM)

Wrong game, sorry.

I say how it all fits together. The magic, the different races abilities, and the economics, and so on. I've played it a lot when it was new. And I played it a lot when I got the GOG version a few years ago. And I still give it a go from time to time. And after playing it so long time I am yet undecided on what is the beast race to play, or the best mage ability, or even the best school of magic.

It is available (or was) on GOG. I bought that version, on sale, for 1 dollar.
