Yes, good for us. But the Stuka was good for what it did early in the war, it just could not handle competition.

Read up on the Skyraider, now that plane could still be used today.

With strelas and stingers? nopes.

Well yeah the Stuka was good for what it did, until it came across a fighter. [:o] By 1943 I suppose a replacement wouldn't have hurt...

To know the Judy flew for the first time the same year of the Battle of Britain just shows how fast things could evolve in that field. But even then these new planes all had their problems. It is interesting to note that the Helldiver had its own first flight at the very same time as the Judy. And in its case, you cannot fault the engine [:D][;)]

Ah come on, it has to be compared to what it replaces/assists. As such, it can't be more vulnerable than a chopper doing the same job, right [;)]

Chooper can be nap of earth, just pop up to fire a missile. not even that now with NLOS(non line of sight) missiles.

In 1943 Germany was converting their Stukas to CAS bomber sort of. D-5 already lost dive the capability, then came the anti tank versions. Besides by 1943 they had much more things to be worried.

A 10 hour loiter time, capable of carrying more weaponry that the aircraft weights empty, think of that against the Somali pirates. Or to assist in counter insurgency.

Aye, I can understand your argument here, but the Stuka didn't became what it became by choice. It became what it became because they didn't have any chance of using it for its original role considering its speed (or lack thereof). By 1943 Germany would have gladly used a good dive bomber in the Med if they had had a competitive one - but the slaughter they sent the Stukas into definitely phased out the poor thing out of his anti-shipping role, and from the MTO pretty much entirely...

The Stuka was an obsolescent design by 1940, and obsolete by 1941 - it isn't unfair to acknowledge it, the plane did good for what it was made for as long as fighter superiority could be maintained. Considering the limited adaptability and evolution potential of the airframe (compared, for instance, to its big bro the Ju88), it is a miracle its new anti-tank role made it last on the frontline as long as it did. But even Rudel ended up flying the 190, as invulnerable as he seemed to be. I mean, can't blame him [;)]

Hum this sort of capability didn't really save choppers in Vietnam against weapons that needed a much clearer LOS than the current ones do - nor did it save the Skyraiders, I agree. But to think a chopper would be sort of invulnerable in that kind of scenario is a bit stretched IMHO ;)
Obviously the Skyraider - just like the choppers btw - would be used for low-intensity theaters for counter-guerilla (an old story USAF revives frequently with a new competition). Manpads havent been much of a thing even in Afghanistan, and the few examples of intensive AA fire we have over the last two decades dont really speak in favor of the choppers over the rest of the crowd. You certainly remember the Apache strike on the Medina division during the 2003 invasion of Irak... I'd say it didn't go as well as when I play that in Longbow 2, I am sure you will agree with that [:D]

If I had a nice, pretty Japanese girlfriend, I would not be concerned with her reading a Japanese book about the Judy to me . . . [:'(]

I might, as I sat there gumming my chocolate pudding. I'm feeling quite old today after a weekend of yard work.[:D]
