There are several of these recon helos in The Next War scenario, and they have various "recon values" in their unit descriptions. Off the top of my head, I think the US Kiowa recon unit has a recon percentage of 28% ... there is at least one WG unit that has a recon value of 60% ... not sure what those represent, HOWEVER,
I have found that while flying it around or behind enemy lines, it can sometimes "reveal" or "observe" an enemy unit in a hex that was previously only "unknown" in status (that is, seemingly unoccupied).
Another use I have found to be is, prior to helo-transporting airborne or SF units, I will use one of these recon helocopter units to "scout" the path to ensure that the following troops will not encounter any possible unseen resistance.
PS I usually divide these units into 3, so that I then have 3 recon units to use as opposed to the one big one ... three diff. reconning chances.
Not sure if that is the best use of them, but it works for me. Your mileage may vary.
PS: The math wizards can tell you what the % recon value really means and what it is supposed to be used for.
I send them on recon missions.
