WABAC -> Radio detection? Or what? (8/25/2019 7:54:52 PM)

It's 0330 in the morning. It's raining lightly. And the Soviets are instantly spotting 4-man recon teams on foot.

So what's up?

WABAC, my guess is a Soviet PRP-3 or 4 with a thermal sight system is somewhere in the vicinity of Hinteln. Maybe a Thermal equipped Hind? Which scenario are you running?

hi Capn,

this is a scenario I started working on after I found the info on the USMC.

There is thermal imaging in the Soviet scout units. But they seem to be seeing beyond their range as shown by the LOS tool

Forgot to add: You would think four guys in the trees would be difficult to spot under ideal conditions.

That scout should be unspotted at that point above, unless there is another Soviet units with LOS from higher ground.

Here is the closest other recon:

That guy has him. Seems to be working as intended for the RS game engine.

thanks for looking at it Capn.

I will say that's a remarkable job of spotting considering the target and the visibility in the hex. Is spotting modified by any factors; like maybe ST Stealth Construction (which is probably for airplanes)? It seems like everyone is getting spotted at the maximum distance at the first opportunity.

Anyway. I hope you take a look at this in Southern Storm.

I think William has already done some work in that area and I will be looking at it as well to get a better spotting model for thermals and radar and other modes.

Good to know. Thanks. Patiently looking forward to Southern Storm.

In the meantime I can't find any evidence for thermal imaging systems on Soviet vehicles in 1988. So that takes care of the night spotting issue.

I don't have a deployment year for the PRP-4 handy. I do see a reference to "early 80's" for the PRP-4 and that the PRP-4M, which is a PRP-4 upgrade, entered service in 1988. Both the PRP-4 and PRP-4M had the 1PN59 thermal viewer (don't think it functioned as a gun sight).

Thanks for the heads up IMG. I see it now in an undated WEG. FM 100-2-3 1991 does not mention the PRP-4. That's not necessarily the final answer.

My scenario takes place in 1988. So I'm not sure there would have been sufficient numbers to fill out the 207th MRD.

I'll dig around some more.

>>Not quite sure what happened to your quote there. Operator error.

WABAC -> RE: Radio detection? Or what? (9/3/2019 8:22:23 PM)

odin.tradoc.army.mil says it was on the original PRP-4 NARD introduced mid-80's. For PRP-4M 1988 they say
quote:

Radar is PSNR-5M; and the LRF is now 1D14.
.

So I'll add it back in.

Thanks again.
