Sorry Warspite - I know politics are off topic but I thought I had a tangential connection to the thread.

One word for BB - Curling

Curling is where men will use a broom to sweep the ice but still won't sweep the kitchen floor!

Well, when you sweep the kitchen no one is hollering "HARDER" at you. That's what makes curling sexy. [;)]

Especially when playing with mixed genders like in a lot of young blondes yelling "HARDER!"

Unfortunately, it seems to me that lazy voters who do not take time to understand policies and their impact are responsible for the success of ineffective politicians in getting elected. Not holding them accountable is another shortcoming. Sometimes I wonder if TV and the Net have shortened attention spans so that no one wants to hear more than a sound bite any more. I hope more people take responsibility for making their own vote as effective as possible and providing support for unpopular but necessary policies. But then, I believe miracles sometimes happen - just not often enough.

Even though one might say that we live in different worlds (as I've noted in my previous post, I reside in a black hole called Crimea), we are still very similar in this regard, as nations/communities. I do not think it has anything to do with TV or Internet. On a contrary. I am VERY happy that we have at least some great public educators available to general public. I personally love John Oliver's show on YT, and there's a Russian Carl Sagan of Political Sciences - Ekaterina Schulmann, with her brilliant educational program on Echo of Moscow and her own YT channel. The world needs more people like these two.

Unfortunately, schools (at least in our region) aren't very good at fostering citizens. They are simply educating population. This subtle difference is so tremendous if you think about it, it makes a huge deal!

Also, I do believe in inevitable social evolution. Our own mortality is making sure of that. But that's long term. When it comes to short term results - only hard work of many great men and women can do good things. Yesterday's "Smart Vote" by Navalny's team is a fresh example of that. Hard work under tremendous pressure gives results even in such difficult environments. But nothing comes for free or happens as a miracle, especially freedom itself.

Good points, L0&L0! I like John Oliver's show too. The Moscow vote yesterday was interesting as a signal. I hope things turn out well, in a democratic sense. We'll know it when female rock bands can make critical comments without issue.

Отличный набор линков, камрад ;) Schulmann forever!

I was taking part in the "Smart voting" myself, disseminating info pamphlets before the elections and then working in the voting commission ensuring the correct counting of the votes.
