jdsrae -> RE: 16 Mar 44 reports (10/13/2021 12:43:30 PM)

The USN were spotted lining up bombardment runs on Kusaie and/or Ponape, so IJN subs were positioned to try and intercept.
Getting torpedoes away has proven difficult, but landing hits on a BB and a CV in separate contacts was a rare double.
Both subs made it back to Truk where they are still under pierside repair two weeks later. Both subs will need to head north to Yokosuka to fully repair so will have about another month on the sidelines before they return to the Pacific.

-----------------------
Starting to see a bit of a pattern in the Allied tactics, with the CV support sitting about 5 hexes diagonally off the bombardment line.
Based on previous raids, the CVs are likely to move to the NE position circled tomorrow, so that is where a few of the remaining subs will move.
Also an opportunity here to get a strike at the northern USN task forces while the southern USN task forces are out of mutual supporting range of them.
Not during this raid, but maybe a future one if similar tactics are used.

Combined Fleet is still wrapping up routine maintenance in the Marianas, so it would take 3 days to get the last few ships out of pierside.
Kusaie has 500+ land combat value behind level 6 forts, so should hold out a few days against an amphibious assault.

Easy 30 points, if it is true.

That was it, the USN has withdrawn from near Kusaie without an amphibious landing.
Kusaie does have about 600AV and about 20 units on it, so maybe the Allies need to prepare more troops. Or this was just a big distraction and they are going to come hard at the Marianas next instead. The Combined Fleet is still there waiting for them, almost fully repaired, fuelled and ready.

Lots of riflemen will arrive over the next few months.
There is a chance to reinforce the 4th Fleet area with all the Ind. Mixed Regts and Bdes that arrive, or use them further back in depth positions.
Maybe NW New Guinea/Banda Sea, Java/Sumatra or Mindanao/Luzon areas.

MTB G-555 arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka
77th Division arrives at Asahikawa – pre-war plan was to move the 70s Divs to the Marianas, so when a few more 80s and 90s Divs arrive over the next few weeks this Div will move south. It might free up the 2nd Guards Div or one of the 1s Divs to move back to Luzon so they don’t all get cut off and destroyed in the Marianas.

LGEN Ochiai’s land skill of 61 is too low compared to his peers, as it puts him in the just above average category.
LGEN Tanaka was commanding an IMB at this stage of the war before taking over 33rd Div, but he is the next best LGEN (Division) on the reserve list so will take command of 77th Div.
This B grade Div will cost just over 1600 PP to buy out.
I’ve nearly saved enough to buy out 2x Divs in an emergency, but will leave this Div on Hokkaido to train for now.

12th Div was ejected from Silchar, but it withdrew SE into Imphal.
It will now be able to withdraw quicker to central Burma to take replacements and recover.
It now costs only 369 PP to buy out, so it has been bought out to 2nd Area Army and will move to Rangoon to recover.
It will be another option to ship out if required, possibly to Java.

Still painful to watch a 90+ experience Division get smashed, but I’m under no illusions that sort of pain will only increase from here!
12th Div delayed the Allies for a few weeks so they did their job.
The Allies have an impressive build up of force in India now.
300+ bombers at Dacca now being supplied by railway…

Yeah, that's quite a number. Any way you can pull off a strike on that field?

True, but it is Apr '44.

jdsrae -> RE: 1 Apr 44 reports (10/29/2021 10:46:09 PM)

Trying to bomb Dacca would be a massacre. 300 fighters there too.
Daylight raids would get smashed by CAP and AA.
Night raids probably wouldn’t hit much and would lose aircraft to AA.
There are a few allied NF units in the area too.

I’ve tried to sweep Allied airfields with 80+ experience George and Frank but they take high losses due to defending CAP having radar support and getting the dive assist from it.

Into the back end of April in game now and I’ve started trying to bomb the Chindits SE of Chittagong.
Even their limited AA and low numbers of area CAP chip away at the Peggy bombers.

I’m having some success sweeping enemy ground units outside of base hexes.
It drags the area CAP into a fight without radar support which usually results in Franks diving on the CAP.
The only Allied aircraft that is holding its own in that sort of fight is the Spitfire VIII. They evade regularly and even when hit they seem to just be damaged and not destroyed. Tough opponent.
Frank is doing quite well against P47s and is a few leagues above Kittyhawks now.

Quick request, jdsrae, how many aircraft engines are you producing a month at this stage of the game. I am hoping to get another reference point for my economy planning.

Thanks!

PS: You are doing a good job so far.

This shows the current engine production and pool numbers.
I'll try to explain the method to the madness shortly, but I'm following a pre-war plan that I prepared that forecast engine demand based on the numbers of different aircraft I plan to build.

jdsrae -> RE: 1 Apr 44 reports (10/30/2021 4:51:12 AM)

Aichi Ha-60 stopped being produced in Dec 42

Mitsubishi Ha-31 will continue to be built at 330/month with possible need for 360/month from Sep 45, but the late 1944+ aircraft/engine production plan will depend on when the Allies start B29 raids.
Mitsubishi Ha-32 is currently 360/month and might tick up to 420/month in Aug 45
Mitsubishi Ha-33 will stay at 450/month for the rest of the war
Mitsubishi Ha-34 will stay at 270/month for the rest of the war
Mitsubishi Ha-43 still has some expansion to go. It is on its way to 600/month but that will increase to 900/month over the rest of 1944 once the Nak Ha-35 change to it.

Nakajima Ha-34 will stay at 270/month for the rest of the war
Nakajima Ha-35 only has two more months of production at 540/month. This is the engine type that some may say I’ve over-produced, but those 2x size 270 factories are about to change to become 2x size 150 Mitsubishi Ha-43 factories. The large pool of Nak Ha-35 engines will be used up producing relatively small numbers of Zero NF, Irving NF, Oscar III and IV, plus engine bonus for research and building the Toka for the end game.
Nakajima Ha-44 will stay at 120/month to research and build the Ki-94-II at 180 aircraft/month.
Nakajima Ha-45 will stay at 720/month until Jun 1945 when it will increase to 780/month. I forgot to increase these 2x factories on 1 Apr 44 as per the plan and only did it a few days ago, so the engine pool has dropped a little more than the plan. Demand for the Ha-45 is fairly constant now with lots of Frank-R being produced.

NE turbojet is on track to start production by Aug 1944 and the 2x factories will then be expanded to size 150 each. Current research is 70% 9/44 so production could actually start in July 1944, slightly ahead of pre-war estimate.

The plan is to run all engine pools dry by the end of the war, with the graph showing some factories able to be switched off a few months early. I might only do that if HI points become an issue, which is heavily dependent on what the Allied strategic bombing campaign chooses to target.

Second bombardment attack by the Allies in a row. This might just let 15th Army escape again which will be a great result.
1st Tank Div departed overnight, so when the Allies see that they might attack tomorrow.
Some Allied Divs are showing heavy disablements and 72nd Brit Bde is still trashed.

awaw -> RE: 1 Apr 44 reports (10/31/2021 3:39:33 AM)

Thank you jdsrae. My overall plan is slightly different from yours. I was planning upwards of 2500 engines and wanted to make sure I was not off the charts or missed out anything major. At least not, if compared to your current production :D

Thank you again for sharing

jdsrae -> RE: 1 Apr 44 reports (10/31/2021 4:58:06 AM)

No worries, I mostly check the plan on the 1st of each month just to see if actual numbers in the pools are doing what I think they should.
This next chart shows that engine production is close to max total output at about 3500/month, but aircraft production is only about 2000/month at the moment. Aircraft production rate will continue to rise to use up the engines.
Pilots coming through the training pipeline is the main limiting factor, but many of them are surviving being shot down over friendly bases so producing 2-3 aircraft per pilot shouldn't see too much waste.
I figure it is better to spend the HI points on something rather than end the war with HI points still left in the pool, as you can't throw HI points at the enemy.

Note that this is my first PBEM and the few AI games I have played this late against the Allies haven't been competitive at this point, so this plan is untested. It seems to be going ok so far.

-------------
That felt inevitable… Cl Kashii has just disbanded in the size 1 port at Miyako-jima.
CL Kashii should have stayed in Japan for her 3/44 upgrade but she’s been RADM Otsuka’s flagship of a TK escort Division.
He’s transferred his flag to the Nittetsu Maru, a Type 2 large TK.
His cabin is relatively spacious, but he isn’t going to sleep very well for the next 3-4 days of the voyage to Fukuoka, as he is sitting on 10800 points of oil.

Kashii couldn’t upgrade at Manila as the repair shipyard is too small, so I just knew she’d be hit on the way home to a larger shipyard.
Lucky to still be afloat, 3x Mikura Escorts are on their way to collect her and head North to Shanghai, which looks lower risk for USN subs as most of them are patrolling the deep water gaps between the various islands around Okinawa.
