I was about to send the Brits to Vizagapatam. I pulled them back after a couple days.

I was worried that if I landed there, he would tighten up his naval searches south of India. Two days out, he didn't see these. I don't want any preps for my landings.

I was looking for places to dump paras. Apparently you can only drop them on actual bases, not actual empty ground. That completely sucks.

They can be dropped on dot hexes as well. And I do drink but not the devil rum-grog.

Okay, that just leaves more for the rest of us!

That is how to describe designated drivers.

About two days until I hit Calcutta.

He's been spotting my ships for the last couple days. CT isn't quite sure where they're headed yet. I've been killing plenty of Dinahs the last couple days with my CAP.

This game just passed up my Bottleneck game on the timeline. Not hard to understand, as we're sometimes hitting 20 turns a week.

20 January 1944

D-Day + 2

Got everyone there. This is turning into a mess. Stuff's slowly unloading at Calcutta, but about everyone's ashore at Diamond Harbor. Took that the next day, easily. I've got like 6,000 AV there, and they're marching to Calcutta now.

Unfortunately, KB decided to show up about 2 days ago. He had my forces spotted about 5 days ago, and he was able to react quickly. It's disheartening facing a group that puts over 800 fighters up in CAP. He also is loaded with Graces too. My CVEs are getting wiped out badly, and lots of transports are getting hit. Lots of base forces are already set up at Diamond Harbor, and I've just sent over 200 P-38s and P-51As for air cover. I'm hoping this slows things down a bit. I wanted to get the Jugs over, but their max range is short by 1 hex, which completely sucks.

I took the chicken way out with my carriers. They attempted a couple raids on KB, but very few survived the CAP. Oddly his never struck back at mine. I ran them full speed past Madras to get back to Colombo. They did get away and are currently unseen, so they should be safe. I need to keep a core to build all my new carriers around.

One oddity I've noted: When traversing between off-map bases (Panama to Cape Town), I can set the TFs to max speed and they don't take any damage or excess fuel hit doing so. Shortens transit time quite a bit. Even works from Cape town to on map to Ceylon. Two New Jersey battleships are now enroute to Colombo.

By the time the rest of my troops reach Calcutta, I should have 3-1 on him in numbers. Lots of combat engineers are also going along, plus lots of armor. Several armor units have Shermans, too. If I can take Calcutta, this war will take a turn.

Forgot to add...

I kicked off an invasion of Tabiteuea, near Tarawa.

KB's away, so I might as well play...

Just a heads up, running ships at full speed off-map is considered an exploit by some players, since (as you say) you gain all the benefits of full speed movement while incurring none of the penalties. I have no idea how your opponent feels about it, but it's worth keeping in mind that this quirk is unique to the Allied side.

Mundy -> RE: There is only War... Mundy vs Castor Troy DBB Scen 28 (9/4/2020 7:27:06 PM)

Yeah, I'm going to talk to him about it next turn.

The way this war is going, I tend not to care, but I do want to be right with him.

Don't know if this has been brought up before. New to me.

WriterNotViking -> RE: There is only War... Mundy vs Castor Troy DBB Scen 28 (9/4/2020 7:35:30 PM)

Good to hear. As for not having heard of this one before, I'd like to think that anyone who plays this game, no matter how much or for how long, will still have things left to learn about it when they breathe their last. [:D]

Best of luck in Calcutta!

RangerJoe -> RE: There is only War... Mundy vs Castor Troy DBB Scen 28 (9/4/2020 7:43:53 PM)

You should probably write off all the ships around Calcutta and Diamond Harbor.

Mundy -> RE: There is only War... Mundy vs Castor Troy DBB Scen 28 (9/4/2020 7:48:45 PM)

I'm leaning that way, but I do have a goo CAP up now.

I could always create 600 different TFs to send them back.

Hoping it'll sting.

The full speed between off-map locations is a well-known exploit. Most PBEM players will not use it.

Mundy -> RE: There is only War... Mundy vs Castor Troy DBB Scen 28 (9/5/2020 1:47:20 AM)

Guess I'm not reading the forum enough.

I've got TFs disbanding into DH, so hopefully I can save a bunch.

23 January 1944,

Troops pretty much landed, though shipping paid the price. Troops making their first attack at Calcutta next turn. Bunches more troops arriving after that.

Over 500 in CAP over KB. Another 200 escorting strikes. I may have to wait until '46 to take them on.

One perk is that I did get my carriers away. KB is roughly directly south of Calcutta, while mine just departed Colombo, so they're free. I'm routing them back across the Atlantic and back to Pearl.

He told me KB was based at Singapore at the time, which explains their quick arrival. Intel did me zero favors regarding their location.

Doing it over again, I would have landed at a quiet west coast base. I'm hoping I have any shipping for future ops at this point. Lots of transports are disbanded at Diamond Harbor, however, so I've salvaged something. Two battleships are docked there also, to fend anything off.

Bif1961 -> RE: There is only War... Mundy vs Castor Troy DBB Scen 28 (9/12/2020 3:37:30 PM)

You can use your carriers to get a little closer and fly off their air groups to be used as CAP and attack aircraft and then head to the east coast and pick up new air groups. It was very common for the US to rotate air groups via whatever carrier was available once the war got going. So fly off all the groups now and leave them behind and pick up new ones when you reach the US.

Mundy -> RE: There is only War... Mundy vs Castor Troy DBB Scen 28 (10/1/2020 3:50:22 PM)

03 March 1944

Picking up the pieces...

Carriers have reached Pearl. I've got about 4 CVLs, 3 CVs with another on the way, and about 12 CVE present there. The Jeep carriers have all converted their fighters to F6Fs, since I have like 800 of them in the pool. Fleet carriers have 40 F4U-1As each (nice boost to their numbers) and I'm keeping Hellcats on the CVLs. I could probably defend against a KB attack at this point.

My only holdup right now is a lack of troop transports, so I have to wait it out a bit. I plan on grabbing the Marshalls next, about 9 months behind schedule. We'll see.

My troops at Calcutta managed to disengage to the SE. Everyone there plus the support forces at Diamond Harbor are heading east to the swamp SE of Calcutta. Hopefully I can break them out to the north towards the Delhi area where I'm still holding out.

Out west, I've been moving troops in from Ceylon onto the subcontinent and have been taking most of the minor bases in south India. I'm gathering up enough forces to challenge the heavy armored presence in Poona. Don't think I can handle Bombay or Madras yet.

My first B-29 unit arrived a couple days ago and is enroute to Colombo. A nice hit on his refineries at Rangoon would start things off nicely. Have to be careful with them, since nothings in the pools for awhile.

Bubbletop P-47s are hitting the pool this month. I think about 130 per month. They've got the range to reach Madras from Ceylon.

It's been a depressing war, and I'm hoping to salvage something out of it. A Pacific offensive won't help me much as far as victory points go, but I don't take those too seriously anyway. I've probably made every bad move possible in this game. My game against Sierra Juliet is the near opposite of this one and has gone mostly well, except for the Marianas.
