BrianG -> BrianG v Bitburg (open for all) (9/9/2019 11:00:51 PM)

My next war has begun.

No +1, normal bad blizzard. I thought we were doing variable weather but I mishit the key and it is historical weather.

Turn 1 went well:

Im trying to improve my Germans in following areas:

Air management and in supply to panzers. Air management as in moving planes mostly thru air transfer and saving miles flown.

Air attacks reported here. Never a large number for me

South open.

Nice normal cut em off. Good Russian troops will get away but I can't or won't attempt the larger south encirclement.

pockets secure!

BrianG -> RE: BrianG v Bitburg turn 2 (9/9/2019 11:14:40 PM)

So far a lot better than my last game v. HYLA

BrianG -> BrianG v Bitburg turn 3 (9/9/2019 11:19:21 PM)

So down south I get in a good hasty.

Then I look at it:

Stavka must have been within 5 hexes of the battle and supplied 4 PVO AA battalions to the defense? Is this a correct analysis of the battle pane?

Seems very odd and extremely rare.

Or did the little town somehow contain 4 PVO aa Battalions?

BrianG -> RE: BrianG v Bitburg turn 3 (9/9/2019 11:22:46 PM)

south turn 3 final. I surround a few good Russian units which did not slip away.

One pocket is breakable. Maybe both .

BrianG -> RE: BrianG v Bitburg turn 3 (9/9/2019 11:24:20 PM)

Gomel approach final

Good tank units are primed for quick seizure of Gomel.

BrianG -> RE: BrianG v Bitburg turn 3 (9/9/2019 11:27:06 PM)

North final

Pskov line is not defended and no units placed as rear guard blockers.

We advance, happy with the light defense.

Seminole -> RE: BrianG v Bitburg turn 3 (9/10/2019 2:52:08 AM)

Not even forcing you to exert contact in good terrain at the extent of your MP range, but giving you just free reign, is antithetical to anything I can imagine trying.
Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Telemecus -> RE: BrianG v Bitburg turn 3 (9/10/2019 11:16:02 AM)

I am so glad to see this AAR. I was so worried this game would go without one and for a worthy opponent it deserves this. Many thanks BrianG!

Is 16 Tank division that was attacked the one bordered in red?

There is a funny rule in the manual that AA activates when airgroups OVERFLIES a hex, not just the hex where the battle takes place. There are different interpretations and not have them have ever fitted for all cases I know of. But at least one description in this case would say the airgroups overflew a unit which is directly assigned to STAVKA which was then in range (?) to commit its flak. But this unit might not have been at 81,98 but somewhere else completely different.

yes I hasty attacked the Russian tank div after surrounding it.

Very odd.

timmyab -> RE: BrianG v Bitburg (no bit for now) (9/10/2019 12:10:00 PM)

I'm not sure about sending 2nd pz group towards Gomel.
Firstly the Soviet player can make it difficult for 2nd pz to cross here if he guesses your intention. Secondly supply is going to be a problem once you cross the Dnieper. Thirdly after securing the Dnieper crossing you will likely be faced with another strong river line defense. And lastly 2nd pz group seems to be posing little or no threat in the Gomel area, short of supplies and in a strategic backwater.

Which leads to another question where is your rail repair. Are you concentrating FBDs in the Baltics and Rumania rather than where they start the scenario. The supply issue will probably be true in either case, but much more so if rail repair is not along/next to the marshes in the early turns.

rr's are one north , it will then split, one toward Leningrad and one towards Vitebsk.

Central will head to Minsk then to Gomel, thence to Kharkov

The south rr is going for Odessa. and will hug coast

I have rr pictures at later points.

I am also doing better with use of the 3 useless extra army commands: I am loading them up with construction and giving them an area to fix.

an early push to Gomel opens up the south to retreat. But one tank Corp will eventually be wasted for 7 turns before they get back into action. They end up all the way south, and then end up getting railed back west around swamp and back towards Tula. I will point out the folly as it occurs.

One good area I often recommend for one of them at least is to help repair rail from south Poland to one of your main rail repairs in the south. Basically create a by pass rail line that does not go through Rumania but will connect to whatever line or lines you build out from the south. You may indeed by doing this.

It will mean Hungarian units can be railed all the way to the front lines when they start to be unfrozen. And German unit arrivals on the western edge of the map will have a quicker route to the frontlines in the south too - usually saves one extra turn of rail travel.

ive been using one of the extra army hq's to fix a rr path from Lvov thru a path thru Tarnopol. The Rumanian rr is building that way now. Hope to fully connect and then be fully connected to the main lines before the Huns move.

I will then make sure Rumanians are not manning the cities on that line.

BrianG -> turn 4 (9/10/2019 8:13:01 PM)

South open

Bitburg does not do a good job getting supply to trapped units.

Tragic accident. I can only guess what actually happened.

BrianG -> RE: turn 4 (9/10/2019 8:16:08 PM)

Nikolaev falls on turn 4. Not much resistance at the river lines.
