Spore18 -> Save Game Runtime Error (9/24/2019 4:45:41 AM)

I'm running into an issue where about 50% of the time when I try to interact with my save games, I get an error that crashes my game and either prevents me from saving or corrupts the file I was attempting to save to. Sometimes it happens when I just press the save game button to open the menu to save and sometimes it happens when I actually try to save. I've already verified integrity of game cache and it persisted. I totally reinstalled the game and played without mods and it persisted. I have no clue where to go from there. It's also not save game specific, it happens with both an MP game I'm playing and an SP game I used to play, so it's not one single bad save game. An image of the error I'm getting is below.

Check if any of your Internet security programs isn't interfering with the game.

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (9/24/2019 8:08:13 PM)

I turned off my anti-virus and VPN and I still got the same error the moment I tried to load a save. In fact the circumstances that trigger the error have changed as well. Now it appears to occur 100% of the time when I try to load a save file, so at this point the game is unplayable for me. What should I try next?

Edit: It also errors out when I try to load a scenario... I'm going to try verifying integrity of game cache again to see if I can get it back to the original error where it just happened sometimes when saving a game.

Edit 2: It didn't help. I'll wait for your advice on what to try next.

morvael -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (9/24/2019 8:42:34 PM)

Is your game installed outside Program Files? Is it run as Administrator?

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (9/24/2019 9:01:16 PM)

My game is installed through Steam, and my Steam library isn't located in Program Files, but it's never been an issue in the past and this only came up a couple of days ago. I'm not sure how to run a Steam game as an administrator, I'll get back to you on that.

Edit: Holy crap that looks like it did it! I went into the game files and found the WarInTheEast.exe file, then went to properties and checked off the run as administrator setting and it looks like that fixed it. Thanks so much!

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (9/25/2019 4:19:36 PM)

Bumping this again because the issue came back, even when running it as an administrator. Weirdly enough it worked fine for a bit when running as an admin, but it stopped working properly again. These are all the different ways I've seen in which I get the error posted above and the game crashes, and each of these seems to happen like 50% of the time when I attempt that action:
- Loading a saved game or scenario from the main menu
- Opening the menu to save from the main game screen
- Actually attempting to save the game from the save game screen if it didn't crash when I tried to open it
If I try to overwrite a save and it crashes, I'm left with a completely empty file, so whatever is going wrong is going wrong after deleting the old save data but before writing in the new save data.

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/1/2019 7:49:06 PM)

I'm just gonna bump this again, and if I don't get a response in another day or two I'll make a new thread because this one seems to have been abandoned since I falsely stated the issue was fixed. Sorry about that.

Shalkai -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/2/2019 3:00:20 AM)

I'll give it a bump too. I started a PBEM game with GamerDad two weeks ago, and we upgraded to v1.12.01 yesterday. Save file I made for him last night is corrupted, gets that runtime error.

morvael -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/2/2019 6:21:42 AM)

Well, it happens in an ongoing game and that was never recommended. Maybe the save was corrupted earlier. Could you post the save here, so I could try to load it for myself?

VPaulus -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/2/2019 9:31:37 AM)

Try also running Steam client as administrator and not only the game main exe:

- Navigate your Steam installation file (By default, it is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam).
- Right-click the Steam executable.
- Follow the above steps to set it to Run as Administrator.
- Restart Steam.

Shalkai -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/3/2019 2:31:49 AM)

@Morvael - Yes, I've been reading all the posts and the warnings about these patches, so no finger-pointing from me at all. :) Teh risk was ours. The other player upgraded without checking with me first, so I had to upgrade as well and cross my fingers. It apparently went boom. Not a huge deal since I was only finishing Axis Turn2. We're starting over.

Just to be clear, I haven't had any save or load glitches myself. I saved PBEM turn, sent it to other player, and he reported getting runtime errors.

Since this is a PBEM both sides have passwords. I made the following saves:
Axis end of turn, before hitting F12, under v11.03 from Steam.
Axis end of turn, before hitting F12, under v12.01.1 beta from Steam.
Axis end of turn, after hitting F12, under v12.01.1 beta from Steam.

I'm attaching the second of those, and sending you my match password in a PM. Not sure if that'll be any help in troubleshooting but worth a try. If you want another of those saves, or for me to ask the other player to send you what he received and his turn password, please let us know.

Thanks,
- Shalkai

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/5/2019 12:21:18 AM)

Making Steam also run as administrator might have done it for me. Hopefully I don't end up bumping this thread again. Thanks!

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/5/2019 7:06:48 PM)

Alright nope, that also didn't do it. Had a couple of sessions where it worked, but once again when I tried to save a turn I had played for a while it crashed and I lost that effort. What else is worth trying?

Bertram -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/7/2019 8:09:52 AM)

Got the same error while saving the game. PBEM game at turn 77, no problems till today.

VPaulus -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/8/2019 12:51:56 PM)

Do you have single hardisk with a single partition?

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/8/2019 2:02:44 PM)

Can't speak for him but I have three different hard drives on my computer, neither Steam nor WitE are installed on my C drive, and my main Steam location is on a different hard drive from the one where WitE is installed. That said, my setup has always been like this and it played fine for about a year before now.

Bertram -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/8/2019 2:15:52 PM)

Made a separate thread for my issue - it might after all be something totally different....

DETURK -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/10/2019 1:28:05 PM)

I am experiencing the same thing on my game.

Hanny -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/10/2019 1:45:40 PM)

Is the sav files present in the WiTe Dat folder?, or in my games?. Could be a pathing problem.

On steam preferences do you have auto update selected?, opt out of beta?

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/10/2019 8:17:58 PM)

The sav files are in Z:\Steam\steamapps\common\Gary Grigsby's War in the East\Dat\save

For Steam preferences, I'm set to auto-update but opted out of the beta. My game's current version is 1.11.03, which should be the same version that all these saves were started on.

morvael -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/10/2019 8:51:37 PM)

This Z is a local drive?

Anyway, I'm afraid it may be some action in the game that causes this. Could you save after every move and battle and other actions that change the game state?

Hanny -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/11/2019 11:30:23 AM)

Did you clear the windows cache?.

Pathing looks ok.

jsqdcsq -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/12/2019 2:51:42 PM)

Guys I've encountered the same problem.
I suspect it has some relationship with a recent windows 10 update since the game has not changed for a long time and it had always been running well. Are you guys with this crash also using a win 10 system?

Spore18 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/13/2019 12:48:01 AM)

I really don't think it has anything to do with actions taken in-game. For instance, I just did this:
1. Load an old save with no problems
2. Make 3 random attacks and a random movement
3. Save the game in a new test save with no problems
4. Quit to the main menu and reopen the save I loaded in step 1, and only then did I get the error and crash
So I opened the exact same save twice, and only one of those times it crashed, so I don't see how in-game actions could affect it.

Hanny - What cache in particular are you talking about?
jsqdcsq - That sounds plausible to me, I'm running this on an up-to-date Windows 10 install. And my laptop, which has been working fine this whole time, has been running on a not as up-to-date Windows 10 install. That said, I just recently updated it. I'll find out if the error has started showing up on my laptop too.

Edit - I tried quite a bit on my laptop to try to get it to crash, but it didn't. So I dunno, it might not be something specific to a Windows 10 update or the big update that I downloaded may not have included whatever broke WitE.

Hanny -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (10/15/2019 9:48:43 AM)

Windows cache. When you run the game the operating sytem (OS) will asign a temp file for the save, overwrite the same file during play as data changes, when you save or quick save this windows temp file, held in the cache, is converted to the game save file. Once the temp file goes wrong, for whatever reason, you need to clear it from cache as the OS will re use it, and re installing the game achieves nothing.

Try a system restore, ie a date before the update. If no problems, its the tmp file.

ggeilman -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (11/2/2019 9:48:58 PM)

Well I cleared the cache and all system files, but still getting a run time error. This just started the last two days.

mwbatl -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (12/6/2019 4:26:57 PM)

I am having the same problem...only recently started happening. I suspect some change in Windows or some related Programs, since the WITE files were working fine up until the last few days for me.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and tried the suggested trick renaming the Sound folder, all to no avail.....HELP!

RC01214 -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (12/27/2019 6:44:36 AM)

I am also getting this error on a Windows 10 machine; this did not occur last year.
Deleting or moving save files away from the save folder (Dat/Save) seems to help a little in delaying the error from occurring, although it will happen again eventually.
Given the above comments regarding Windows 10, I think it has something to do with a Windows update on September Tenth.
It could also be related to Steam: is Spore18's laptop installation of WITE Steam or separate?

gids -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (1/12/2020 4:03:41 PM)

Runtime ERROR,did THEY EVER found a solution, because i read through the forums and quite some people have it.....i suffer from it last couple of weeks and didnt change anything....

DorianGray -> RE: Save Game Runtime Error (1/22/2020 9:28:55 PM)

This runtime error should be identifiable and able to be diagnosed on the creation of a proper dump (*.dmp) file.

Developers can take that file and find the exact line in the source code that is causing the general protection fault.

The trick may be is how to configure your local systems to generate (*.dmp) files if the program itself is not generating the minidump itself (as shown here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/dxtecharts/crash-dump-analysis )

Several good articles describe how to enable Windows dmp file creation:
* https://helpx.adobe.com/xd/kb/how-to-generate-crash-dump-on-windows-machine.html
* https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/wer/collecting-user-mode-dumps
* https://www.meziantou.net/tip-automatically-create-a-crash-dump-file-on-error.htm

So rather than playing guessing games regarding cache, horoscope, time of day, number of children you have, etc...on what is causing it, I would suggest configuring your system to generate a *.dmp file and send it to the dev team so they can appropriately identify and fix faulting code.

The program should not be faulting no matter what you, as the user, is doing.
