XTRG -> What should i read next? 20th Century East Asia. (9/28/2019 10:04:14 AM)

Just finished Stormclouds over the pacific, so i'm looking for recommendations, next book is "Implacable Foes".

I'd appreciate books that have more "data", i do enjoy Max hastings but i find his style to be overly narrative - of course i can look up his sources but i won't be able to always do this.

in my Library at present is:

Implacable Foes
Stormclouds over the pacific
Kaigun
Sunburst
Forgotten Ally
Hell to pay
Naval Policy between the wars Vol 1 & 2

Currently just starting my education, but i'd love to try to steer it into 20th century east asian history & be more informative to those who watch my terrible WITP Content.

Thank you Admirals.,

XTRG.

Polmar & Allen's Codename Downfall is good on the far end of the war.

Reynolds' The Fast Carriers.

Ron Spector's Eagle against the Sun.

John Costello's The Pacific War.

Also, both John Ellis's Brute Force, and Richard Overy's Why the Allies Won have chapters on the Pacific war, but are worth reading in full.

Michael Hickey's The Unforgettable Army on the Burma campaign.

Finally, google Col David Glantz "August Storm" - which is available free in pdf form from the DTIC. It is pdf # 144378 (This link is to the original CSI paper; there is also an expensive book version but no need to pay for it.)

Two books by S.C.M.Paine are "The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895" and "The Wars for Asia 1911-1949." First off, they are not cheap. Second, the book on the Sino-Japanese war was very, very good in my opinion as it sets up what would be the ground work for WW2. I'm pretty ignorant on that area of the world until reading this first book. Some of the long simmering animosity between Russia, China, Korea, and Japan are easy to see from that book that are still there now.

I can recommend the following book on China. Frederic Wakeman's knowledge of China is atonishing.

I am finishing up Pacific War by John Costello. It was a good read and one who should pick up.

I recommend the Pacific War trilogy by Ian W. Toll (the third book is still being written.)

Book 1: Pacific Crucible War At Sea in the Pacific 1941-1942

Book 2: The Conquering Tide War in the Pacific Islands 1942-1944
