I'm on Turn 149 of the mega-game, and am plotting a raid on Amsterdam Fokker with Typhoons of 3 Sqn; as escorting fighters, I am offered Bf109s of I/JG302 based at Nidda...

Did you by any chance start this game with the 1.04 beta? That might be the issue.

Just 1.04 update available from Matrix. You may want to wait to restart another campaign until the next patch which is due out before the holidays. You won't be able to use an old save since we need to bump up the limits on some data elements.

8 BG of B-17F/G heading straight as a die for Bremen.
I scramble @480 fighters.
Escorts leave off and my fighters pile in, a couple of gruppen every couple of minutes.
Many individual damaged bombers breaking off for home with small groups of fighters with them. Many wrecks on ground.
So far so normal.
One extra devastating rocket attack forces 92d BG to turn for home.
This must be the lead group as I now have 7 individual BG's heading for the target but all my assigned fighters are pursuing the 92d. That's over 250 fighters swarming around @20 B-17's whilst nothing follows the other BG. I have only 40 fighters uncommitted to hurt them before the target.
Bit unrealistic or do I have to suck this one up?
Those 250 fighters will accomplish very little.
