What?

Its not just "another team". Its the USA team. Wearing red white and blue shirts, and representing their country on the field of (sporting) battle. Carrying the emotions, hopes and dreams of all Americans with them.

I don't care how much they get paid, representing your country's #1 side in any international sport should be the pinnacle of the sport. And the MLB clubs should be forced to release the players for that national team.

We are going to have to disagree on this one.

You have to remember the US is a big place with a long sports tradition, baseball being it's most historically relevant game. It has local and regional rivalries and a very US focused media and populace. The USA team is well supported in virtually all sports, and would be in baseball whether it's amateurs, lower-level professionals or the top 25 players in the US.

People can only take in so much, and with overlapping seasons, four big sports leagues, and university level sports in all of those types, it's a lot. In the UK there are many fewer major sports, with football and rugby dominating, and often with fans being invested in one or the other, not both. Tennis is a focus, but only sporadically. In OZ you have Footie, rugby and cricket. A bit of tennis. Not much else. Those sports have shorter seasons and more sporadic schedules than baseball, basketball and hockey especially.

It doesn't really matter how much it's cool to represent your country if your job takes 3/4 of the year and you know you will be playing 160+ meaningful games plus another 10-20 non-meaningful games every year. Even more if you make the payoffs. Is there any other sport with that gruelling a schedule?

There may be a time when the international focus on baseball could work more effectively, but maybe it would have to take place in a good weather destination in the winter rather than in the summer, and it would still require a lot of backing from the MLB owners. What's the incentive for them?

Ah sports.....best way to get people animated [:D]

I think it was Obvert who mentioned being in the wrong time zone to watch a game but when I lived in London I would stay up until stupid o'clock in the am to catch some baseball - assuming you could even find a way to watch the game.

I also fondly recall getting to the pub at 6am! to watch a rugby match being played in OZ while in London. The better half was not impressed when I stumbled home before noon with somewhere between 6-8 pints in me.

At least rugby is play on, all the time. As a rugger we used to tease our American football player friends about playing for 12 seconds and then resting for 60 (ducks to avoid some of the wrath of America's largest fan base).

'Proper' Football. One has not seen intensity until going to a match. Perhaps because so few games a year are played. Went to an Arsenal game once - did not have a dog in the fight and still felt lucky to come out alive.

Cricket - still don't understand despite years of friends trying to teach me. The one upside to this one is three days of non-stop G&T consumption. My GP would be aghast at that last statement.

Tennis - Wimbledon is worth attending for the sheer 'display' it puts on....but I have never held a real racket.

What's that Canadian 'sport' called where they broom ice dust to make the thingy go the right way? That became an Olympic sport? Pleeeeeze. Oh - that's right, Curling I believe.

True Curling is played in Ireland.

I can do this for something really special, but it's more rare for me these days. This is what makes it almost impossible to follow my former favourite sport, NBA basketball, and my Portland Trailblazers. It's actually easier to see games when I'm in Melbourne visiting my wife's family.

I now follow Premiere League, Champions League, Six Nations, World Cups of Football and Rugby, March Madness and NFL. I just can't keep up with baseball, NBA, or anything else.

Canoerebel -> RE: Pulling for Lokasenna's Nats (10/24/2019 2:45:48 PM)

There's an old saying in the USA that "baseball is made for radio." That's how I do it, since I don't have television. I listen to Atlanta Braves games throughout the season. It's not ritualistic or ironclad. I'll miss some games and seldom listen to an entire one. But I probably catch at least part of 150 games during the season. I love the ebb and flow of a baseball game on the radio. I like hearing the announcer offer insights into the game or tidbits about where a player is from and the circuitous path he took to the major leagues, and reminiscences of the past. While listening, I can be doing other things, such as driving or playing this game or painting the house. So it's no stretch to say that I love Atlanta Braves baseball. Since June 7, 1974.

It's probably something only the old timers can appreciate, but if you could sign up for a radio broadcast that just talked about the game, I'd pay money for it. No politics, no SJW topics, no contracts, no wives and girlfriends - just the history of the game, the diamond, and what's happening on it.

Just my .02. I haven't followed the Olympic Games since they let in the 'pros', so I couldn't care less. To my its all just politics anyway, and there's too much of that crap around as it is.

I sometimes listen to games on the radio. Lets me do other things while I hear the game.

As a kid, I use to carry a radio on my paper route to listen to afternoon games.

Blasphemy ! [8D]

As a fellow AE gamer and 'polite Canadian' I will now say a little non-partisan - non-secular prayer for your Irish soul

Canadians invented it.

Canadians invented and own the nomenclature - "Bonspiel" a solid mix of French and German words to describe a tournement

Canadians invented and own the social customs - winning rinks must buy a round of drinks for the looser - and the offer should be reciprocated.

---

PS I do concur its at least 51% skilled activity vs sport - it takes some balance and has a winner but is a fun fun game.

Macclan5 -> RE: Pulling for Lokasenna's Nats (10/24/2019 6:03:16 PM)

Baseball on the radio.

Concur.

Perhaps one of the finest North American Experiences is to listen to the Ball Game on "AM Radio" while simultaneously cutting the grass, taking a break with an ice cold beer, and following along.... on a warm day in late June.

Thank you for restoring my optimism today [8D]

The simple things really are the best in life... and WITP-AE of course

It’s coming into summer/cricket season down here.

I listen to test match cricket (that’s the 5 day version for the uninitiated) via radio while doing yard work on weekends.
The game has official drink breaks which are a good prompt to stay hydrated myself!

In work hours, the live scores websites that stealthily show the live score in the bottom task bar are pretty handy.

Also, who says that the Olympics are the only international venue for truly global competition?

Not me. In many sports its, but not in others - Football (association), rugby, cricket* etc all have world cups that are a more true test.

(*Cricket is not in the Olympics at all, unlike baseball, but as Ghandi said, cricket was the best thing about the British Empire, and a civilising influence.)

I had not realized it til now, Washington has two sons of Hamilcar; Hanibal and Hasdrubal. If this is the Second Punic War all over again we know how that came out. Carthage gave them a good scare.

There was a time I used to follow NBA. But once I understood that all major American sport leagues (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS) operate as closed shops with clubs as franchises I quickly lost all interest in all of them. I hope FIFA will enforce USFF and MLS to adopt promotion/relegation and participation in the league will be based on sporting merit, and not resources criteria.

There were a lot of bad things about the British Empire, especially in India, but I'd say the ideals of universal health care and education might have more lasting and positive effect than cricket. [;)]

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Pulling for Lokasenna's Nats (10/28/2019 1:33:25 AM)

I've lived overseas for about 2/3 of my post-undergrad life. I've narrowed down my religiously watched sports to college football. I'll watch at 1 a.m., 4:30 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, or one hour earlier if the archaic non-daylight savings time is in operation. I used to watch it purely on Armed Forces Network, but now there are plenty of streaming options. I also had a three-year stint in the late 90s in which I had a Star satellite dish. That's when I started to be exposed to rugby, F-1 and cricket. I got into rugby a lot, but could not by any means understand or get into cricket. One advantage of rugby is that a lot of the games are in close time zones and you can catch games at pubs all through the Asian region. A great way to learn the nuances is to play the ignorant yank at the pub and get a nearby limey or limey derivative, or even a Frenchman, to school you on the finer points of the sport.

Cheers,
CB

I’ve never watched a live game of baseball, but 4.5 hours of beer drinking while watching sport sounds like a good way to spend an afternoon or evening.

Singing, don't forget the singing in the 7th inning stretch … after 3 hours of drinking, the singing …

Yes, there might be some nut pulling going on after three hours of sitting. I'm sure Loka is not the only one ...

Ha! FIFA telling us how to run our shop for greater transparency and leadership quality? That's the funniest thing I've heard in weeks! [:D]

ETA: Way to go Houston! Powerful surge to take three games in a row! The Nats are on the ropes and have got to get it together if they want to force a game 7.

Canoerebel -> RE: Pulling for Lokasenna's Nats (10/28/2019 12:31:09 PM)

The Nats got really hot in August and stayed that way deep into the playoffs. Now they can't buy a run. It must be driving their fans crazy.

I can't imagine a World Series in which the road team wins every game. The odds are so long. That and the fact that the Nats have fallen into a funk - and the fact that Houston is a very strong team - bode ill for the Nats.

These are two good teams, but the Astros are better by a not insignificant margin.

fcooke -> RE: Pulling for Lokasenna's Nats (10/28/2019 2:08:29 PM)

I thought Houston in 6.....but not by this route. But good observation CR - so much for home field advantage.

MSNBC this morning reported that not only has this never happened in a WS, it has never happened in any major NA sports championship, 7-game series. Game 6 was epic. On to seven.

Great series - great finish...

As a fan from an AL League city and local 'homer' so to speak.

Happy that the Nats - that old Expos franchise got "the big win"

Neither Happy nor Unhappy - that the Astros lost.

Living in the AL East - cheering for the underdog is somewhat natural.

While it's only recently been in the news (or rather: for the first time in a few years), I find myself rooting against the Astros as a team despite their stable of lovable stars and HOF-caliber talent (Verlander, Greinke, Altuve) because their front office is kind of despicable. And I'm not talking about just the Osuna issue, but also their behavior vis-a-vis other clubs -remember last year with the cameras in the dugout? Or how about the unauthorized access to the Cardinals data? Their front office is and has been rotten. So it's a weird case of enjoying (most of) the players while despising the franchise itself.

Not too different from the Yankees experience, actually, although in some ways the Astros push the envelope on inappropriate behavior that little bit farther.

I mean Greinke's pitching last night was nuts. The guy is a freaking wizard. I wanted him to succeed, but I wanted his team to lose (or not have even been there in the first place) simply because of the moral bankruptcy of the Astros organization.
