W8taminute -> Possible bug - Italy surrenders (10/29/2019 10:22:10 PM)

Hi,

First off I'm really enjoying this game. It is a good design and very fun to play. I did however notice an odd event and was wondering if this could possibly be a bug.

In my 1939 Campaign I'm playing as the Allies. Paris fell to Germany in late July 1940 however on the next turn I was able to recapture the city. Of course Italy declared war on France when Paris fell the turn before and was at war with the Allies. Immediately after I captured Paris from the Germans I launched an attack into Italy capturing Turin and the resource hex located to the east of the city. When it was the Axis turn Italy offered negotiations for surrender which I accepted. Upon accepting Italy's surrender all of Italy's units vanished and Italy became part of the German empire. Libya became a neutral nation with no alignment to either side.

I continued playing the game to my current turn in June 1941. Germany occupies Italy with many German units. Is this normal behavior to have Italy surrender to the Allies after losing just one city and a resource hex?

Historically, Italy signed an armistice with the Allies after the defeat in Sicily. The armistice was signed on Sept 3, 1943, after the king ordered the arrest of Mussolini on July 25.
So, it is a plausible scenario to have Italy surrender after one of its main cities is taken.

I should restate my question since it did not get answered and I may not have posed the bug clearly.

Has the new patch addressed a bug that I noticed in my 1939 campaign as the allies? The specific observation that in August of 1939 Italy surrendered after losing one city to France.

Game rules have countries surrendering after their capital and enough cities have been captured. Why did Italy surrender after only losing one city which was not even the capital?

It's not a bug. The Italian surrender conditions are pretty slim.

Hmm that is a tough cookie to swallow. I'll have to think about this. Italy should be slim but not that slim.

I will simply reduce their morale break down so this doesn't happen so easily.

Thank you for the reply! I understand that historically Italy surrendered shortly after Sicily was conquered. But that of course was after being in the war for 4 years. The Italian people had had enough and overthrew their ruler.

But to have them surrender after only being in the war for a week or so doesn't make sense. Thank you for reconsidering Italy's surrender conditions.

Perhaps you could also look at two different sets of conditions.

1 If Italy declares war on the allies, that is they are the aggressor. So the status quo.

2 If the Allies declare war on Italy. I think in this case the people would be more resistant and prepared to fight on longer if the allies were aggressive toward Italy. So a higher surrender level is needed to force them out of the war.
