Very interesting stuff. I remember my mother telling me of the shelling of Sydney by I-24. All the shells fell in well-to-do suburbs in the East area centred around Bellvue Hill. Apparently afer the shelling, people were desperate to sell properties in the area and were practically giving it away and today, that real estate is worth zillions.

During WWI a German Seaplane also buzzed Sydney Harbour. She came from a surface raider. One flight was in july 1917. The plane was hoisted over the side of the surface raider SMS Wolf. This is such facinating stuff, it realy captures the imaganation, reading of the exploits of these men and their ship's, I Got a book from the Naval institue press a couple years ago intitlited, Graf Spees Raiders, and It gave a detailed acount of the Emden and hear exploits in the Pacific in WW I ( and the other ships of Germany's Pacific fleat in WW I), totaly ingrosing. The exploits of Germany's surface raiders in WW2 is just as facinating I hope at some point a way can be found to include them and the German U-Boats in WiTP.

Last year in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra I saw one of the turrets off the SMS Emden. [IMG]http://www.awm.gov.au/images/galleries/anzac1.jpg[/IMG] They also have a turret off HMAS Sydney too.

TY for posting that link, I briefly looked through it and I saved it to my favorates I will go back and read more tomarow it's quiet late Hear now, one of the things I like most about UV is the added learning experance it has provided for me, I have always been a Big history buff and while I have been a flight sim addict for the past few years (AH mainly) UV has goten back in tuch with my roots so to speek, I started playing War games when I was 8 with my dad, Toyoko Express was the first game, then Avalon Hill games like Flat top and later SL and ASL. AH started me in to researching more on Austrails contrabution to the SWPA in so much as I did skin refrences for some of the Set up's in AH historical areans and created plane set's for their use (or as much so as the plane set allowed for). Somthing I came across the other day while looking at Austrailan plane info was a skin refrence I found for a kingfisher in Austrailian collors their was a line mentioning how they were used from Austrailain Merchants for protection from Sub's, I was woundering if this was going to be incourperated some how in WiTP.

That's really interesting, we haven't had any war here in Massachusetts since the American Revolution. There was also some action in New England during the War of 1812, but nothing nearby. The best we had during WWII was German U-Boats sinking transports and oilers. There is a beach resort area called Hampton Beach which used to have a carnival and boardwalk on the beach. German U-Boats would use the lights from the carnival to see the silhouettes of tankers coming down from Canada to Boston and blow the hell out of them, much to the shock of the people on the shore. "Oooh, fireworks!"

Michael Ganmom's book Operation Drumbeat details the operations of the German U-Boats off the east coast and recounts many interesting atack's, one U boat sailed partway into NY Harbor, other shelled Shiping in broad daylight off the coast in the south having a running gunbattle in front of crowded beachs, prety brazin stuff realy, it's a good read, The Germans sank like 600 ships off the east coast in just a few months Churchel was so freaking out he send RN ships to help cover the East coast untill we got our act together.

Yeah, it's amazing how many times Australia attacked from the sea and air. They did reconnaisance also over Tasmania and Melbourne as well. Of course these sea and air attacks were only tiny pinpricks compared to the overall war effort. Still, it was a pretty big effort by the Japanese given their limited resources.
