$trummer -> Group RTB orders question (11/16/2019 6:37:11 PM)

I'm researching this in the manual but I thought I'd pick the brains of the power users in here:

In air combat tutorial #5, I tasked AMRAAM-equipped IAF jets on a CAP mission to knock down incoming bandits. This they did with characteristic dispatch but then RTB-ed "Shotgun" and nothing I did could persuade them to get back on their patrol station. I’m pretty sure they had some BVR weapons left, which was frustrating. I am wondering:

- Are these orders set for individual flights, groups or missions?

- What did I need to do to change this RTB logic and get the aircraft back on mission?

- What is the right setting -- and where do I set it -- to get a flight to stay on station even after expending a few BVR weapons as long as they are not actually Winchester? And, as I said, is this setting mission- or flight-orientated?

Thank you!

Try "Unit/Group Doctrine->Withdraw/Redeploy" to set RTB triggers.

I've not played this one in CMO yet, but that's where I'd expect to set it.

Thank you. I am finding the Tomcat example in the manual a bit un-specific.

Oh and you should be able to set that globally as well as overrides for specific missions.

Be careful with the ROE/WRA/Withdrawal settings between global and mission. In the majority of scenarios, doing it in missions is better.

Thank you. Yes, I would be loathe to change global settings, I just wasn't sure if the logic required adjustment via mission or flight. Mission makes sense.

In that scenario I checked the loadout details for the A/A F16s - the "WinchesterShotgunDescription" column specifies RTB after one engagement.

This is a new one on me - I'm not sure how to override that, or even if it's possible. Any ideas anyone?

EDIT:
I was looking in the wrong place - it's in Doctrine->AirOps->Weapon State, Pre-Planned:

You can set Weapon State to "Shotgun: all BVR expended - Disengage", for example.

Yes, I just replayed the mission (it was actually #4) and adjusted the withdrawal (weapons state) selection for the mission so that it would not change any global defaults. Worked well and I didn't have to chase after F-16s that were scurrying away this time. I also took the opportunity to adjust engagement distances for the mission in order to improve my fighters' PK. Amazing how much more flexible and tactical fighter combat is now, compared to early CMANO.

Actually, I think you could do all of that in CMNAO. WRA and withdrawal logic has been in for a few years.

Yeah, I’ve been somewhat intermittent in my attention to the game since I first played it in 2013. CMO is such a positive evolution that I’m determined to dig in for longer now.

Indeed - I've been setting doctrine for ages - I've just never before noticed the "WinchesterShotgun" column in loadout. Probably because it's far off into scroll territory.
