Haven't seen any sign of it, but the trailer seems to show much more realistic CGI of the aerial battles and attacks on ships. I would go and see it if it showed up here. Otherwise, I would PPV on a movie channel.

In 2005 there was Spielberg's War of the Worlds. The same year there was another one with C. Thomas Howell. Now this. What is up with that? Seems his career has really dived since Jamie Lee.

Oh, that guy from the Southland tv series.

I remember seeing a trailer of this movie like a year ago thinking how bad CGI and acting was. Seeing it now after seeing 2019 Midway, it's still a bit weak in the acting/sound department, but suddenly feels much more realistic :D That's some perspective!

Don't think it's gonna be available in our theaters though.

It's on Amazon now...don't think it had a wide release into theaters.

Yeah it went straight to Amazon. Some of the reviews said that you can do better CGI if you played a video game, but hey, who knows.

I remember seeing the trailer for this movie a while back, and then being confused about it when the "Midway" movie came out. I thought perhaps the movie was originally called Dauntless, but then they changed it to Midway. Then I thought the movie might have been shot with Judd Nelson, but then re-cast and shot with someone else.

I guess I was wrong, oh well.

Judd Nelson's career tanked, for sure. I remember watching some movie on Sci-Fi channel about a black hole created in St Louis that spawned an energy monster that went on a rampage, lol. I used to live in St Louis so that's why I watched it - to see some of the local landmarks. It wasn't a good movie, surprise surprise.

"Dauntless: The Battle of Midway" is on Redbox now. Haven't seen it but it is the rainy season out here so who knows.

At least in the other "Pearl Harbor" movie the USN carrier and the F-14s were real. I guess the Zeroes were some other kind of plane "dressed up" to look more or less like Zeroes. As much as a SciFi movie can be believable it was believable.

The premise of "Dauntless" is believable. Lots of flyers were retrieved by PBYs after the battle as well as a bunch of Japanese sailors from HIJMS Hiryu (IIRC they were spotted by a PBY but picked up by a ship).

Since its at Redbox now I watched "Dauntless: The Battle of Midway" this afternoon. It definitely has a different focus from "Midway". There are no Japanese other than their machines in the movie. I don't know anything about CGI so I won't comment on that except to say that the CGI was as good as "Midway" (2019). It did portray Adm Spruance as more involved in battle decisions than Midway does.

The movie mostly involved the interaction of the pilot Norman Vandivier and his gunner Lee Kearny as they floated in the water after bombing the Kaga (they were in VB-6) and a PBY and crew assigned to rescue downed fliers. The unfolding of the battle is in general incidental to the story of the pilot and gunner and the "Dumbo" crew.

Unfortunately the DVD I rented a couple of flaws so I missed some of what happened but I watched the majority of it. Perhaps some of them would help me to understand the ending better but I won't rent it again just to catch those missed scenes. It was more focused on the individuals than the battle. I'd give it a C whereas I'd give "Midway" a solid B.

It was litteraly shot in the directors back yard. The scene of the sbds diving was amazing but the rest was just ok.
No spoilers.

You can still rent DVDs? As Bill and Ted would say, "Whoa..."

Cheers,

I came across this film previously. I think it's called Dauntless or something. It's basically a B-list film with perhaps a slightly higher budget than your typical B-list film.
