farflamex -> Require windowed mode but can't set resolution (11/27/2019 7:31:58 AM)

I had the problem that many others are having of extremely sluggish performance in full-screen but setting to windowed mode fixes it completely. The problem is, I can't seem to get it to accept any resolution values and it always gives me a tiny little window, about half the size of my screen. My monitor's native resolution is 1920 x 1080 but it seems to be setting it to 1080 x 800. Changing the px and py values just seems to be ignored. Here's my command line.

"D:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -skipVideo -altFont -archive -deepcolor -w -px1920 -py1080 -skipVideo -cpu3

I've tried the Seabee utility but that just seems to be creating the switches for me and I think I'm typing them correctly above anyway?

I've tried changing the px/py to various values but it just ignores whatever I type and uses the small window which is almost as unplayable as the laggy version and a huge strain on my eyes.

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -fd -altFont -px1920 -py1080 -archive -cpu1 -dd_sw -deepColor -skipVideo -w

is what I'm using. I notice you didn't cap the C in -deepColor, don't know if that makes a difference. I don't remember what the difference is between -cpu1 and -cpu3

-fd is for full display

Here's an interesting comment from another thread. I fix the one problem by moving the windows command bar to the side instead of the bottom. It covers a little bit there but unimportant stuff.

Left click on the bar and drag it to the right. You could put it on the left or move it to the top, also.

Sorry, the interesting comment:

Thanks for the replies Geoff, unfortunately none of this seems to work. I was hoping that the -fd switch might fix it but to no avail.

It does show in the window and it performs fine and I'm fine with the window being a bit smaller than my screen size. I don't need it to be full-screen and to be honest, I prefer games in windows than full-screen as it's easier to tab out. It's just that the window I have is so small that I can only see a small piece of the map. I need it to size to about 1800 x 900 or thereabouts, which would be just a bit smaller than my screen resolution. For some reason, it seems to just revert to 1080 x 800.

I think I read something about a 'force resolution' option, maybe that's what I'm looking for. Can't find it now.

I'm not in a huge rush thankfully as I can't play until tomorrow really and I'm just going to run through some tutorials for a while, so it's bearable and playable. But I'd like to get this fixed at some point.

Thanks again for your response [:)]

If I recall not all resolutions are supported. Try 1440x900.

farflamex -> RE: Require windowed mode but can't set resolution (11/27/2019 2:29:31 PM)

That doesn't work either. Thanks for the idea though. I think 1920 x 1080 probably would work though because iirc that's the resolution that it's set at initially (or at least, the examples on various messages seem to use the same res). Is there a list of supported resolutions? I don't think this is the problem though since it's just perma-stuck on the smallest res.

Anachro -> RE: Require windowed mode but can't set resolution (11/27/2019 2:58:10 PM)

Hmm, I 1920x1080 should definitely work. I think I had your problem once before but fixed it and don't remember how. For reference, here are the switches I use. I recently upgraded my monitor, but the resolution I used previously was 1920/1080.

HansBolter -> RE: Require windowed mode but can't set resolution (11/27/2019 3:00:50 PM)

I prefer a lower resolution to make icons and text more legible.

I run the game at 1280 x 720.

On my older computer (Win 10) with on board graphics I had to reset my Windows resolution to match the game resolution to get the game to run full screen and fill the monitor.

On my newer machine (Win 10) with a GeForce 1060 graphics card I no longer have to reset the Windows resolution to match the game resolution to get it to run full screen and fill the monitor.

Sometimes the querks are hardware driven and you have to experiment to over come them.

Also can be you are using wrong dash. If it is the bigger one(em dash) like on the screenshot it won't work.

1.  Read these threads:

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4457237&mpage=1&key=&#4462713

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4637477

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4415089

2.  pxf and pyf are the resolution forcing switches.  To work both the monitor and the video card must be able to support the forced values.

3.  The switches are case sensitive.  If the appropriate case is not used, that switch is not applied.

Screenshots really should be provided by the OP.

Alfred

Thanks for all the tips guys. Looks like I stumbled on the correct solution for my machine, from the first of the threads listed above. The switches that work for me are -px1920 -py1080 -deepColor -cpu2

It does mean that it's running in full-screen but that's fine. It's very responsive and now that I look at it like this, I prefer it because the icons aren't so small.

So I think I'm sorted for now, thanks for your time and help. If I do run into more problems, I'll be sure to post screenshots next time [:)]

Just be aware that there's a known problem with Windows 10 systems. When a "mouse-over" pop-up window disappears in AE, it leaves behind a "bleed-through" from the desktop. It's extremely irritating, to put it mildly. Although a few people have said they don't have this problem, for most the only solution is "windowed mode".

I don't have the problem but I wonder if the solution is different. I opened the Windows 10 display properties and turned off transparency. Because I also run windowed mode I can't say which thing stopped the problem.

My settings are "transparency on", so as a test I removed the -wd switch and, to my shock, the bleed-through bug is gone! Tried a few different screen resolutions and all worked fine. The bug was not original to Win10 (it first appeared in October 2017 after one their major updates), so perhaps it was solved in a subsequent release.

Anyway, that's good to know. I'll stop telling new folks that Windowed Mode is mandatory (useful for other reasons, of course).

farflamex -> RE: Require windowed mode but can't set resolution (11/27/2019 11:04:23 PM)

Hopefully I won't face this problem. I'm not able to play it properly yet as I don't have time and I really want to sit down when I have a few hours (days?) spare to get into it. I'll try to do a quick run-through first though to see if I run into the bleed-through problem, if I do, I'll have to go back to the drawing board and try to get it working in windowed mode.

What am I looking for to recreate the bug? Which mouse-over pop-ups am I looking for?

As an example, put your cursor over a task force and you'll get a small pop-up window describing what's in it. The instant the mouse moves somewhere else, the message box should vanish and you'll see the map below it. If the bug is present, you won't see the map, but rather some portion of the desktop behind the game. If you have the bug, there won't be any doubt. Hopefully not.

Excellent, it doesn't happen on mine, the window disappears and the map is redrawn correctly. Thanks for all the help, looks like I'm ready for a weekend of grognardery [:D]

If you really get into it, you are in for a lifetime of grognardery.

Yay. I love deep strategy and I've been fascinated by this theatre ever since playing the old 'Great Naval Battles' games back in the early 90's. Looking forward to this [:D]
