Looks like Strategic Command War in Europe and Warplan kind of cover the same area. Anyone have inputs on these two? I want to buy one, not sure which is the best. Anyone have any input?

Thanks!

What some youtube videos on each and make your own decision. I have Warplan and im really enjoying it. Not played SC but SC in Europe is about £12 on steam atm.

Steam has had it's part in messing up some of our games, better to pay a couple dollars more and stay away from it. The less support it gets from us the less inclined our limited developers will be to spend time on it.

You can't compare the two, they both serve completely different ideas and concepts.

If you come from a board war game back (from the 60's, 70's and 80's) then you'll love WP.

If you liked such board games as Avalon Hill's The Rise and Decline of the Third Reich (aka Third Reich) then you'll love WP. If you liked SPI's ETO Theater of Operations you'll love WP.

I have several SC3 games and they are fine but I prefer WP due to my background in board war games from the 60's through the 90s.

Agreed.

I have played both. I prefer Warplan.

As I see it, Warplan is more of a wargame whereas SC is more of a video game.

SC is full of gimmicks and somewhat gamey to me. At present I would admit SC is more polished but the Warplan designer is very active in addressing questions and concerns.

My tabletop wargaming background is roughly 35 years. I have an obsession with grand strategic WW2 games and have played most--with my favs being AWAW, WiF, and AETO/APTO (and I also like the quirky outcomes of Totaler Krieg). AWAW is probably the leader of the pack but I like aspects of each.

For video games, I have nothing but dislike for most of the attempts to create a computer version of a decent version of what I'm interested in. Warplan is quickly showing itself to be a solid effort.

MWiF was a valiant attempt...but the outcome was disappointing (to me anyway). I am still bitter about how much I spent on what I consider to still be an incomplete game. No fault to the designer and his incredible army of folks who have helped. It has been a considerable community effort at the very least.

Others will--and should--disagree with me since it comes down to personal preference. I'm simply not a big fan of SC but I absolutely see why people like it.

Anyhow, that's my two cents.

I'm also trying to decide. Living in a rural area with a telcom dataplan, I'm only able to play vs. the AI. With that in mind, please give opinions about the current state of the AIs. Like a previous poster I started with Avalon Hill board games so this game really appeals to me.
Thanks.

Essro, I was going to try SC because its global and I consider that a valiant effort until I saw someone catch three American CVs with battleships. Cant form TFs etc. whoops. I also feel for WiF. I like the global map and naval and air aspects. But the convoy system yikes. WP is a legit effort to address air, naval and land. I'm watching and offering my comments. And he's having a time with the Battle of the Atlantic which is the main Western Allied campaign for the firt years holy smokes. Considering its importance it always gets abstracted into oblivion, Must be tough to model.

This thread has been very useful to me. I will be going with Warplan, as a 1970's boardgamer.

Thanks for the input!

CHINCHIN -> RE: Strategic Command WIE vs warplan (11/28/2019 8:22:23 AM)

I have played both. Both are very good games, but for me WarPlan is superior to SC. Mainly in combat and naval movement.

tigercub -> RE: Strategic Command WIE vs warplan (11/28/2019 10:50:01 AM)

i have both warplan is better by far! hands down!

Delaware -> RE: Strategic Command WIE vs warplan (11/28/2019 12:10:10 PM)

Thank you all. I was on the fence too, being somewhat meh about SC but graphically finding WP a little lacking.

All we need is for IronX to port his awesome SC counters to WP!

Zovs -> RE: Strategic Command WIE vs warplan (11/28/2019 1:49:48 PM)

Mark Royer has created some awesome counters.

These are the best there is in my opinion!

AlvaroSousa -> RE: Strategic Command WIE vs warplan (11/28/2019 2:03:45 PM)

Both are different games. I play SC3 WaW. SC3 has events and better graphics that make a player feel more immersed in the game. I believe their European map is also a larger scale. It is very moddable and their editor is easier to use than mine.

You can get fairly imaginative with SC3 if you put your time into it.

Both games play very differently. It is just a matter of taste. And I know almost all of you will end of owning both games like I do.

AlbertN -> RE: Strategic Command WIE vs warplan (11/28/2019 2:29:44 PM)

I personally prefer WarPlan in terms of mechanics.
SC3 has a rather wonky naval system, units attack one by one (which I consider silly), and if a unit takes replacements it does not move the whole turn (which is silly as well).

WarPlan models the whole better - albeit suffers of balance issues in my perspective severely crippling Axis - that tends to be normal due to being a fresh product.
