Tooting your own horn over your 20 years of wargaming experience doesn't impress anyone here.

Have 46 years of wargaming experience under my own belt as quite a few others here do as well.

I'm another one.

Me too, in fact I'm sad to say that I beat those years hands down, I started with Avalon Hill in 1965. That's almost 55 years ago....damn I'm an old fart.... nothing to brag about.

I still remember my first Midway game (which I still have) in which I got SMASHED as the US player!!! Been loosing great games ever since.

Priceless.

I was taught wargaming starting in 1973, my junior year of high school, by a guy I met in school, who became my lifelong best friend, and handed me my rear end in game after game after game for a very long time before I began to hold my own.

Avalon Hill was the order of the day, with my first game being Blitzkrieg. SPI was big as well, but the way they rushed out a game every month in the magazine, that would be followed the next issue by a 5 page erratta correcting all the things they got wrong in the rush to publish, including missing combat results tables, led to them being labeled SPI Madness. AH just had more polish to their games.

Oh, and I'm actually not counting games like Battleship, Stratego, Broadsides and Hit the Beach or my start would have actually been about a decade earlier.

Geez, they were only $5.00 when I started.

Do you remember the Avalon Hill approach to marketing? They used humor in their catalogues.

"Those were the days my friend we thought they'd never end...." Sounds like a song!

Ah yes! I remember the Mad Magazine version of the Lord of the Rings, sung to the same tune:

Two things.

Mary Hopkin has been in my playlist for about 50 years. Did you notice that the video had 26 Million downloads? Astonishing.

Second for Hans. I haven't seen or heard of Hit the Beach for about the same 45-50 years. I used to play it and it was my favorite until the Avalon Hill / SPI days.

Good times,
Trav

AH was my entrance to wargaming. Tactics 2 specifically. A fairly simple game but got me into the gig. That led to bigger games and taking over my Mom's dining room table. Cannot recall who was playing in 63 ( I was not around until 68). I have been buying games ever since - some of which I have never played (supporting the industry and all).

Never had a cat but the brother/sister/Mom unit tended to take out the counters. And then my Mom decided my models were child toys and put them in the bin. [8|]

I still have my 1958 Tactics 2 (much beat up). The problem was whoever moved first won.

I played against myself....kinda cheating. I cannot remember the the name of the game but it was one of the very first computer ones I had. SBDs on massive CAP creamed the IJN> Then the Hiryu sank a BB. Turns out her secondary battery was mis-entered as 14 inchers. I was so excited to catch a CV with a BB....you can only imagine how many beers were consumed after the CV took down the BB.....

I'm actually just a few years behind. I first Avalon Hill game was Guadalcanal back around '68.

Which is why I came to dislike them. They had some good game ideas, but the finished product, meh. What was left of the outfit became Victory Games. They published good titles.

The only one of the original four of the series I didn't own. That is 'til I purchased a copy off E-bay about three years ago.
