Was reading up on some of the lesser known minor WW2 naval actions, in this case The Action of November 1st 1944, and came across this amazing sentence fragment:

Looked into it further, and yes, that's an accurate description! Built in Scotland for the IJN as Kawakaze, sold by Japan to Italy during WW1 at British urging, 25 years service with the Regia Marina, and then captured by the Germans and impressed into service before being sunk in 1944. Wow!

Reminds me of the unbelievable career of a guy named Rafe in TMTSNBM.

Seriously, there are some strange adventures of various vessels out there. IIRC, the Japanese captured an escort vessel of some kind during their conquest of the DEI or Philippines, and that vessel had previously belonged to another navy. And the British captured a U-boat and recommissioned it as HMS Seraph.

The USN had so many new vessels coming into service that it never considered re-using any captured enemy vessels, like U-505.

The Japanese did convoy escort duty in the Med in WWI so it's not too absurd.

Cheers,
CB

Didn't the troops in Normandy encounter Koreans captured in Russia fighting for the Germans in France against the Americans and British?

CombinedFleet.com has a complete list of the ships captured by the Japanese that were put into service with the IJN. The only one I remember is USS Stuart (US designation)/PB-102 (IJN designation)
