Seems logical that it should but I thought wisdom was that it had no effect on bombers, only fighters.

Does anyone know for sure?

It's mostly the other way round, I believe. Has to do with avoiding flak, IIRC.

Small refinement since that post was made.

For a bomber pilot, the defensive skill rating doesn't assist with evading an enemy fighter, whereas it does for a defending fighter pilot. However, for a bomber pilot, the defensive skill rating is factored into the "effectiveness" of the bombers guns firing defensively against the attacking enemy fighters.

I can't immediately think of how a test could be made by a player, without access to the devs debugging tools, to isolate and discern from all the other factors taken into account in combat, this impact.

Inability to set specific skill levels for pilots in the editor is inconvenient indeed.
Test can be done with mass training, picking 2 pilot groups afterwards with same exp and ground skill but different defense. And flying them against same CAP on an airfield mission several times, counting hits. Better defenders would have more hits per bomber, given same weather. Too much hassle for a meager info gain though
