lt1956_slith -> Patch 1.06 problem with uninstall and reinstall (1/16/2020 10:17:14 PM)

Hello,

I wanted to warn fellow fans of this game, that the 1.06 patch has a problem. When you install it, it makes 2 files "4" and "6" which have 0 bytes and cannot be uninstalled even using special software to delete on boot. This in itself is bad enough but to make it worse when you try to reinstall the game, you will get an error and it will not reinstall. I have tested this out on more than one system with the same results. I think the reason no one has reported on this yet is that no one has uninstalled the 1.06 version and then tried to reinstall.

If anyone else gets a different result let me know in this thread, as i had to reimage my system just to reinstall the game. For now I am back to using 1.04 since I can install and uninstall without issue.

Be aware if you test this out you WILL NOT be able to reinstall the game. so I suggest testing on a safe system. Also even though the files acted like a virus by not being able to be uninstalled, there was no warning from the Virus software. But I do think the developer made a mistake somewhere when compiling. Also there other language files that install, which shows this patch may have been rushed more.

Anyway I hope this helps.

Good information, not surprised as v1.06 had other problems, the alternative to v1.04 is v1.05, which did not appear with a Matrix installer, but 'Wastelands' provided a self-install update folder.

Hello, What other problems were in the patch, I seen the one about ini files but are there any other tech problems? For me the uninstall and lack of reinstall was a killer. If I didn't have an image made of my PC I would have never been able to play the game again. It's scary to think how many others out there don't know that if something goes wrong and they uninstall the game will never be allowed to reinstall again!

1.05 fixes the bugs on basic random crashes right, has anyone tried uninstalling and reinstalling after patch 1.05? I would hate to install only to have the same problem.

v1.05 does have CTDs, which seems to be a fact of life with ToF ever since v1.01, with each attempt to fix the game introducing more problems.

The main issue is that, since v1.01, the combat odds terrain modifiers have only been applied to one nation (Poland, #01 in the countries list). This can be fixed by adding text to the country_consts.ini files in each scenario folder and adding country_consts.ini files (with the required text) for those nations which do not already have them.

There are other issues that can be fixed with text modification in these files, which can be done using 'Notepad' and are featured in the discussions on this forum, although you will have to change the forum 'Display Topics 365 Days', to 'ALL' to see the old posts.

The units images folder contains well over 1000 images and I thought that this might be the source of CTD at game start, so I have a reduced number of units images set, which seem to have limited the CTDs at start up, for me.

Other in-game CTDs may be generated by game 'events', like US entry in 'Fall Gelb', so I use the F12 key to keep the US out and multiple game saves for restart after crashes.

There is more, but maybe later if you are still interested, there is a good game here, but you have to work at it, however the modifying of text files can introduce more features into the game, so the extra work is not wasted. For instance, moving modifiers into individual country_consts_ini. files allows for separate national attributes, rather than the one-size-fits-all of data in the main consts.ini file, in the main scenario folder.

V1.06 added more faults to the game, the 'armor in city' combat modifier is not working and corps and division listings changed to army, etc.. Although not a big deal, I did not know what else had morfed, so I stayed with v1.05, the devil you know......

PM sent for more.

Haven't tried to uninstall any of these versions, so don't know if the problem affects all versions. All my versions are heavily modified so don't want to lose them and have to reinstall all the mods.

You can always copy the entire folder to another place, uninstall then reinstall. I think5 may be safe because it is a folder, but 1.06 would be interesting to find out if anyone else had the same problem. Let me know on the 1.05 patch when you get home, it's nowhere online.
