dwayne -> Rematch: Dwayne(GE) vs Vathailos(GB), august 44 (7/15/2003 4:21:45 AM)

Ah, nice sunny french country. But this day do not seem any good to oberst von Stainer anymore. He was ordered to advance toward british position and he has information, that brits will do the same.

He still have that terrible memory of masacre in Lybian desert. He bearly escaped when his staff was kill during tough fight. He do not underestimate the Brits. This they will realy by hard for everyone. But he can not fail his Vaterland. He must hold the british horde in the Normandy.

dwayne -> info (7/15/2003 4:23:46 AM)

We are playing august 1944, GE vs GB, 4220 pt total, meating engagement, vis 20. Max 800 pt for offboard artyllery, any air section, infiltrators allowed. No prelaid mines.

dwayne -> Turn 1 (7/16/2003 3:48:18 AM)

Battle plan is ready. Troops in positions. We begin with preemtive artylery strike, which proved to be partialy succesful and with smoking the entire front. Our forces moved foward. We hope for a good result of this fight (we would take a draw:rolleyes: :D )

Let hope enemy do not have plane support. This could be fatal for us.

Vathailos -> T_00 UK (7/16/2003 3:50:24 AM)

Riley and his men were rested and ready for battle once again. They'd been re-fitted with new equipment and had completed their transition training. With the gunnery practice freshly behind them, the were ordered immediately to the front.

Once they arrived, they had one evening to prepare their plans, and as morning broke, they again found themselves facing the Germans. Only this time, the terrain favored them. Gone were the vast reaches of desert, over which the Germans had demonstrated uncanny accuracy. They'd been replaced with dense foliage in spots, rolling hills, and farmland.

What troubled Riley most were sketchy reports that he'd once again be facing General Dwayne. Could it be possible? How could he have escaped? Did Dwayne leave his second-in-command behind to engage his reece troops in their last meeting?

This confrontation would hopefully hold the answers.

EDIT:

Both cunning and speedy! Dwayne beats me to the post. I will play my first turn (and see the damage your artillery wreaked) as soon as I get home, send it, and respond with my DAR here.

Thanks Dwayne!

Vathailos -> Turn 01 UK (7/16/2003 6:04:51 AM)

Well, well. Smoke screens the Panthers' advance. Some AT assets engage them through the haze, but fail to penetrate their armor. Germany rains down artillery on our positions.

You attack again with ferocity, Herr Genneral. I too believe this battle will proceed to a swift finish...

(back to you)

dwayne -> turn 2 (7/17/2003 2:51:06 AM)

Nothing much happened. Some light ATG (3 in) engaged my recon panzers (Panthers G). No luck :p

We managed to take southern VH without resistance, but we feared we find it soon.

Heavy mortar smoking occured on both sides. We and our opponent are realy careful. At least oberst von Stainer learned something from his terrible battle in desert against gen. Vathailos.:o :rolleyes: ;)

Vathailos -> Turn 02 UK (7/17/2003 3:37:35 AM)

Indeed he has learned a thing or two from our last encounter. General Dwayne has captured the Southern terrain and is rapidly closing on the middle section.

Our AT assets are bouncing shells off those Panthers at almost the same pace as their Tigers. We do however have one asset we're bringing to bear amidst fierce German artillery bombardment. An asset Riley did not have at his disposal in the desert.

The Panther platoon leader ordered his wingman to a halt. As the wingman scanned the terrain to his flank, the platoon leader cocked his head to the side and lifted his radio set from one ear. There was a short pause as he spun around. He was last seen barking into his radio mike as he fumbled to shut his hatch. The German flak cannons errupted as a Typhoon streaked downward toward the Panthers. Of the first volley of rockets it fired, one hit the ground beside the Panther, and another errupted in flame off of the side of the turret as it spun to face the incoming aircraft. But the second volley of rockets struck the hapless Panther in its rear engine deck, and it's turret vaulted skyward.

It appears as though the German forces are rushing to consilidate their recent gains, and have a well-fortified rear. We'll have to come up with a way to penetrate those defenses.

Tread carefully lads...

dwayne -> Turn 3 (7/17/2003 5:04:40 AM)

This turn was very succesful for our valiant german forces. We damaged one Crocodile (uf, very dangerous, but not anymore :D ) and one Cromwel.

We still hold southern VH, but the action is going on in the northern part of the map. Our recon forces crash together and we emerged victorious this time. Most of brits are pinned and some are destroyed.

The only trouble for us are those anoying Typhoons.:eek: We survived this time and managed to damaged one of them. I hope we will not see him anymore.

This fight seems to be very interesting.

Vathailos -> UK Turn 03 (7/18/2003 2:18:16 AM)

The Germans have a massive force it seems. New Panther tanks, as well as Kingtigers are rolling over the battlefield. We have very little to stop them with. They also have a powerful assortment of artillery. AA Mobelwagons, SP 150mm Howitzers, and a large number of 81mm mortars.

Their infantry seem to be more of those fierce engineers that we faced months ago in the sand.

At this point, we are consolidating and digging in. We have a bloody fight ahead of us, in every sense of the word. The enemy has a superb force arrayed against us. Only cunning and superior tactics will enable us to survive.

Typhoons claim one mobile 150mm piece and one mobile AA gun.

General Dwayne, I await your next turn...

dwayne -> (7/18/2003 3:19:19 AM)

Next few minutes on the battlefield have been very interesting. My Panthers have make a short proces of two Cromwell VII in the south. We are holding there good position.

In the nort the battle is fierce. One Reece destroyed along with some infantry. Other british troops pinned down.

Those ...... typhoons :mad: :mad: take another mobile artylery out. :mad: And my AA unit are blind as ever. I think I will move their crew to "straff battalions" :D

Vathailos -> Turn 04 UK (7/18/2003 7:09:28 AM)

Indeed those Panthers are shrugging off our 75mm rounds, and theirs strike home, every time. Crock down, One Cromwell's down as well, and another out. Hetzer hits a reece-carrier point-blank and evaporates. Sporatic small arms fire is heard across the front.

Airpower may be our saving grace. This turn, two more loitering Typhoons streak from the sky, on the tails of General Dwayne's advancing Panthers. The trail tank takes a 60mm rocket in the rear deck and explodes skyward. The lead tank shakes off a cannon hit, but a rocket lands nearby and damages the roadwheels.

Our Forward Observers are earning their pay today. This may put a dent in the German advance. Heavy, heavy artillery rains down in the North, pinning many of our troops.

dwayne -> (7/22/2003 3:15:45 AM)

Due the comminication problems we were unable to report. :rolleyes:

This few minutes of fight we used to streghten our position. And we used lots of our onboard atrylery. Nothing much happened expect gen. Vath's glider landing directly on one of our mortar position. The enemy forces have been imediately engaged by our mobile reserves - platoon of King Tigers :D :D

dwayne -> (7/22/2003 3:57:53 AM)

I have ordered decisive assualt on british positions on whole front. After massive mortar bombardment we advance on the north with engeneers platoon and platoon of Hetzers. The enemy was heavyly pinned and did not offer any real resistance.

We also made our move in the central positions.

Enemy lost 2 AC and 2 tanks (I think)

Oh and we dicovered some SAS troop in our back, who destroyed one of our mortar nest (2x81 mm mortars). We have dispatched some of our reserves to deal with it.

Vathailos -> Turn 6 UK (7/22/2003 9:11:18 PM)

“I said… tell the Northern troops to pull back into their alternate positions immediately!” Riley shouted into his radioman’s mic. He doubted that Lieutenant Hensley had heard the entire order because of the constant bombardment.

The Germans were dropping mortar fire in waves all across the map (note to self, check Dwayne’s 10% artillery purchase;)). His troops in the North were in danger of being overrun. His anti-armor forces in the South were taking a pounding (Cromwell destroyed), and another wave of German armor threatened to break in the central East.

Taking a gamble, Riley ordered some of his reserves forward to reinforce the central Eastern front. Two quad .50 half tracks crested a small hill and annihilated two German infantry squads standing on an opposite rise. One of the .50’s was lost as it pursued a recon squad and drove into the path of two oncoming Panthers, but not before taking out a SP 150mm howitzer that they were escorting. We had a small victory in the South, as an Achilles tank destroyer, intent on flanking a Hetzer, instead found a Panther in ambush. For once, the Panther crew missed a shot, and our boys capitalized on the opportunity.

Riley was shuffling his armored forces across the map to support heavy threats to the North and central East. This had left him dangerously thin in his rear, but the battle would be coming to a close soon.

Special and support forces may yet turn the tide for Her Majesty’s troops though. An SAS squad takes out another 120mm position, and our Typhoons kill a Hetzer, Mobelwagon, Panther, and damage a second Panther. King Tigers continue to prowl their rear area.

Time is running out, we must break them somewhere, and soon…

dwayne -> (7/23/2003 2:09:18 AM)

Situation on the front is not good. We have taken some ground but we do not have enough troops to hold it. I realy hope I will be able to score a draw.

Those planes are killing me. My useless AA unit are blind as ever. Some SAS comandos are rumaging in my back, but we hunt them.

P.S. I see that in the begining of this tread are some fight rules and between them is 800 pt limit on offboard arty (which is 20%) but as I wrote in my email I am not sure the exact conditions arranged. If I overdo it , again I realy sorry :rolleyes: :o :o :(

Vathailos -> Turn 07 UK (7/23/2003 7:41:31 AM)

"Sir, we have encouraging news from the Southern Armored Reconissance" announced Major Werthing. "It seems as though two of the enemy's tank destroyers, Hetzer-type, have been destroyed by our Achilles in a counter-attack. In addition, reports are that two more have had their main guns disabled. No heavy fighting in the North, but we are still shelled mercilessly. In the center of our sector, we have stopped a King Tiger, and may have taken it out! Again, a well-placed series of shots with an Achilles. Our typhoons have scored another direct hit on an L-series SP 150mm Howitzer as well, and it has blown apart".

Riley actually managed a smile at the news. "And what of the Special Operations groups?" he asked.

"They are reporting that they've taken out another pair of 120mm mortars, and they're reporting that the Germans are engaging them with 20mm AA fire and King Tigers".

The smile quickly faded from Riley's face. Several of his close friends were part of the SAS group.

Editor's note:

I read a 20% limit on arty, Dwayne and took that to mean 800 pts out of our 4000 on any type of artillery. Simple misunderstanding, but I think a "percentage" limit on arty typically means all types (both on and off-board, some like me even include planes in this ;)). But no worries! We'll just have to play another rematch!!! Muwahahaha! :D

dwayne -> doomed (7/24/2003 4:42:34 AM)

It seems that we will loose this fight. After a good initial attack, when we destroyed 3-5 enemy vehicles every turn, we are being pushed back realy hard. We still hold good position on the north but the situation in central and southern parts are critical. I have ordered our last reinforcemant there.

The bigest problem is I do not know what happened. How could I screw it so much. Ok, the typhoon are giving me a hard time, but the lack of our ability to hit something is depresing. :( :( :mad:

I have a king tiger in good position, he shot 3 times at enemy Achiles only max 1000 m away and missed greatly.:mad: And the performance of my AA units .... :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:

As I said earlier, they all have luck I do not have Straffbatalions:D :D

Vathailos -> Turn 09 UK (7/25/2003 7:38:34 PM)

The Germans continue to fight fiercely. Our SAS squads now hunt their artillery almost at will (2 X 120mm mortars, 1 X 81mm mortar, 1 X 150mm SP Howitzer taken out), but the middle of the map still belongs to Germany.

In the North, a Hetzer is finally hit by a Wasp's flamethrower and explodes in the North, but we are unable to damage a second one driving over our shell-shocked infantry. A King Tiger still holds a position in overwatch, 6 shots from Achilles in and nothing even hits it. The KT is much more accurate, damaging one.

In the Center, UK infantry makes small progress, but nothing substantial. No real losses for the Germans, despite another Typhoon attack.

To the South, a Cromwell stumbles upon another KT, and GE Engineers. A Crocodile dispatches some recon elements and crews.

Germany may yet win the day, as we are unable to wrest the VH's from their control, and only two turns remain...

Well-played General Dwayne! :)

dwayne -> turn 10 (7/27/2003 5:07:30 PM)

Fight is fierce. I have ordered all avaible men to defence in the central part. Even the crew were recruited to hold our position there. Our last tansk tried to destroy advancing troops, but no luck. We have abadoned our mortars in back. We have no men to help them but they are useless for us as they do not have ammo.

The last turns will be hard.

Vathailos -> Turn 10 UK (7/28/2003 1:02:25 AM)

We have made a grave error in the enemy's rear that I fear may cost us a victory.

Our SAS, instead of staying hidden, moved and were spotted by a King Tiger. They have been engaged and supressed, and now a Hetzer has arrived to hold the formerly unguarded rear VH's.

*smack head*

Elsewhere, the ability to rally troops may spell victory or defeat for either side. To the North, my infantry are still suppressed by the waves of enemy artillery that washed over them.

In the center of the map, the same holds true.

To the South, both of our forces are stretched thin. I've got one damaged Cromwell alive, and one Crocodile. The enemy has at least one King Tiger in the area, and infantry.

The final order to assault across all fronts...

dwayne -> is over (7/29/2003 12:10:10 AM)

fight is over. Vath scored marginal victory. I was able to hold my home VH. Fight was fierce and I learn a lot.

Vathailos, I thank you for a good fight and I am looking forward our next meeting. :D

Vathailos -> Turn 11 UK (7/29/2003 1:04:02 AM)

Incredible fight Herr General!

Well-played, I must say. You savaged my forces at the end, and I think I pulled the marginal victory out because my equipment costs less than yours ;).

I too look forward to our next engagement.

I sent you a PM with a few ideas (H2H).

Let me know what works for you.

Very enjoyable, thanks again!!!
