Varancar -> Boston Guards the Denmark Strait, 1985 (Uncle Marks Tutorial #1) (2/18/2020 11:02:27 AM)

When I first got my hands on Command, I dived straight into this scenario. I tried it a couple of times and needless to say, I failed miserably each time as I did not know what the heck was going on, and how deep the mechanics of ASW are. So, I went and did all the other in game tutorials before attempting this again.

I thought it would be good for me to do an AAR so that I can learn from my mistakes, and for other newbies to this game to learn from. Without further ado.... here we go:

- PLA-671RTM Victor III [Shchuka]

• Aircraft
- Ka-25BSh Hormone A

Intelligence: A small SAG and one or two SSNs or SSGNs

Available Assets
• Ship
- x1 D 89 Exeter [Type 42 Batch 2]
- x1 F 207 Bremen [Type F122]

Initial Thoughts

The Exeter class was designed to provide area air defence for the task force with sonar capabilities limited to hull. The Bremen on the other hand while build for ASW, lacks a towed array. Lastly, the Kortenaer has a passive-only Towed Array Sonar system which would be helpful to detect OpFor submarines.

The Viktor III has a 5nm torpedo and a 8nm torpedo with a nuclear warhead. We need to be able to detect it at least 10nm away to take it out safely. For that, I will need the Kortenaer to tow its array, probably just above the layer.

Sea State 4 means that waters are pretty choppy which will provide extra acoustic cover for any submarines.

Phase 1: Locate Soviet Forces
Intent
• Locate and destroy Soviet Forces
• No casualties

Summary of Events
On commencement of the Operation, the 3 ships in the SAG spread out to maximise chance of detecting OpFor, on a 45 degree bearing.

30 minutes into the operation, we received a transmission from HQ advising that the Boston (SSN 703) has been attached to my command to patrol the SW portion of our AOR.

The next 6 hours or so were relatively quiet other than a couple of civilian ships passing by.
At 1020 hours however, we picked up a KA-25BSh Hormone A on a 7 degree bearing from the Kortenaer. The Kortenaer broke away from the SAG on an intercept course for the Soviet helicopter. Radar was set to active to obtain a precise firing solution. The KA-25BSh proved elusive.

In the 20 minutes duration from 1100 hours, 3 more contacts were detected about 50nm north of the SAG. At 1209 hours, missiles were launched towards the Kortenaer which were all intercepted. We’ve manually classified them as hostile and 2 Harpoons were fired at the closest 2 contacts from the Kortenaer and the Bremen. We managed to destroy SKUNK #4 but the 5 Harpoons were successfully spoofed by OpFor. We lost contact with them at 1411 hours.

At 1636 hours we picked up the Ka-25Bsh again and managed to shoot it down this time 10 minutes later.

At 2028 hours, the Boston picked up a BPK Kashin Mod in its convergence zone. Unfortunately, it appears they have slipped passed the SAG. We attempted to intercept the Kashin to launch our torpedoes at about 4nm. However, the Kashin was going full speed at 35 knots and it was impossible for the Boston to catch up. Of the 3 Harpoons that were launched, only one managed to impact the target at 2157 hours. BDA reports that the Kashin has major flooding. The next Harpoon were spoofed and missed the target.

The Boston was ordered to pursue at flank speed. At 2245 hours, we surfaced to Periscope depth and saw that the Kashin was on fire and heavily damaged. At 2255 hours, the Kashin was destroyed by our torpedo.

The main mission objective was to locate and destroy Soviet Forces.

While we managed to locate the Soviet Forces, we were unable to anticipate their course and one managed to slip passed our SAG. In addition, we failed to take into account the anti-air and spoofing capabilities resulting in a lot of failed and wasted missiles. That being said, we managed to overwhelm the defences and managed to sink 1 ship out right, and another sunk at some point during the engagement. We were not able to ascertain damage to the 2nd ship at that time as it was far out of range.

We manage to pursue and destroy the 3rd ship after manually working out expected location based on heading, speed and time since last contact. That proved useful as we managed to plot an intercept course to close the distance.

Looks like you did pretty good.

One comment I would make is that it is risky to separate your surface ships as you did. These are three very capable ships on their own, but generally you gain mutual support from each of them if you stick a little closer together. Overlapping sonars, different EW suites, ability to track and engage more incoming missiles etc.

Good job.

Hmmm I will keep that in mind. I think I was trying to cover many things at the same time.

I know the temptation, but if you have helicopters that can do the job instead of surface ships, they are far more flexible and expendable.

It's usually a very tough call to make.
