Ok. I have to post. We all need to reconsider our activities during this unprecedented time and the police are spot on in this Midwestern town.

On Monday, the Kenosha Police Department posted on Facebook, "Due to the growing concern over the flu, Coronavirus and other sicknesses, the decision was made to cancel all crime in the Kenosha area. We are unsure when this ban will be lifted."

They also asked any potential criminals to stay indoors as they "monitor the situation closely."

In Northeast Ohio, the Struthers Police Department took to Facebook on Thursday asking for all criminal activities to stop until further notice.

"Due to the coronavirus, the police department is asking that all criminal activities stop until further notice. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in the matter. We will update you when we deem it’s appropriate to proceed with yo bad selves," the department posted.

That is nice to know they will have plenty as I buy my few groceries after work.

I've read some local govs are suing in order to allow it's citizens to go out and about. Have not look this up.

Since the 90s we have Think Tanked the scenario of civil war in America. China will back one side and Russia will back the other.

China likes the idea of globalization, it puts the world in a bag for them to grab.

As with most people, he did what he wanted to do, then looked for reasons to rationalize it. However it did assure that Maryland remained under Federal Control, although it's citizens did fight in other states.

Canoerebel -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 12:10:35 PM)

John, there have been big steps taken by each kind of administration (party). Later, the opposite party had control of Congress and the Presidency and totally or mostly failed to undo whatever steps were objectionable to one side or the other. So we are bi-partisan in grabbing and failing to undo grabs.

My comment about Lincoln was not a criticism. It's what he felt he had to do under the most dire of circumstances.

I think our nation will be fine through this. :)

In Huntington Beach the lifeguards tried to get a guy on a paddleboard to come in because the beach was closed..so the Sheriff Dept sent a patrol boat from Dana Point to arrest the guy.

He was a either an ANTFA guy or the Libertarian candidate for Governor

JohnDillworth -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 12:34:05 PM)

Early on in this thread in about early March I shared my predicted infection rate. I was in the pessimistic minority. When I was younger I used to take great pride (that's one of the 7 deadly sins, no?)in being right. Now I dread being right. Anyway, back in early March the infection rate was doubling every 3 days and the rate was 32% growth per day. My spreadsheet is no longer accurate. We are not tracking at 32% a day. As of last night, the growth rate since March 8th has fallen to 27% a day. Now that may not look like much but that is a hopeful trend. If the U.S. rate is consistently falling, even as we do more testing and it spreads through the country, we are doing better than if we did nothing at all. Maybe much better. Stay at home and isolation is working. We need to keep doing it and do better at it but I do think we are going to get through this and see our friends in person for July 4th. That's an optimistic goal but I think we have a good shot at it. Life can be humbling. As mentioned elsewhere. This is the end of the beginning. It's time to get some wins.

Canoerebel -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 12:36:57 PM)

That's encouraging, John. Thanks!

I'm hoping to be on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia in the latter half of May or early June. That's looking pretty iffy but not impossible.

DD696 -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 1:41:35 PM)

Here in Georgia a statewide stay at home order went into effect yesterday. Supposedly, that should be good news. However, the order over rides all local edicts. So various businesses that were closed down by local county and city governments can now reopen. He also reopened the beaches "for exercise only". The governor stated that he did not know until a couple days ago that asymptomatic persons with covid-19 could infect others.

Needless to say, in my neck of the woods local mayors are protesting to the governor to reconsider.

Canoerebel -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 2:06:48 PM)

While it is true the governor said that, it was taken out of context and misrepresented by the press (naturally).

Previously, the governor had said (on at least two occasions I listened to) that the virus could spread from asymptomatic sick.

Wednesday, his statement was with respect to asymptomatic people who will never show symptoms. IE, some Covid sufferers will never show symptoms and never get sick. That's a pretty new finding and the governor was making that point but the press got all excited because they live on gotcha moments - but they were the ones who were got, though most listeners won't ever know it.

The statewide edict almost perfectly matches most of the county and municipal ordinances that were already in effect. I'm not aware of any major differences, though there may be some here and there.

Canoerebel -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 2:15:24 PM)

Right now, emergency services and the medical community in many areas are greatly stretched fighting a novel enemy of unknown strength and staying power. They are at war and there are a good number of casualties, both civilian (the sick) and amongst the emergency and health workers.

We civilians on the home front, at least in places like that where I live, have it comparatively easy. While some are suffering great business losses and other serious privations, many are doing fine with power, entertainment, plenty of food, etc.

While I'm at home with my family, or out hiking, I'm not gonna grouse while the government and others scramble and strive to get a handle on this - especially while the medical/emergency community is worn out and taking casualties. Basically everything being done is being done in good faith. Let's get through it and then sort things out together.

Dumb Press Headline of the Moment: "DC Mayor says 1 in 7 could be infected."

Context: That's 15%. A week ago, two weeks ago, national and international leaders were predicting 50% to 70% (I saw 80% in one country) infection rate. Assuming the DC mayor is in the right ballpark (big if) that would be hugely encouraging news undeserving of the kind of headline that scares people.

The neighbors are NOT following the rules. The 19 year old next door has weightlifting buddies over every day then they go out front and take selfies. [:)]

The mom has meetings there every Saturday. They also put up a Christmas display the size of Detroit on my rose bushes but I am trying to be nice. The dad has one of those GPS and camera guided powered gold caddies. On weekends he sneaks onto the course and plays a few holes. The thing KNOWS where it is going and drives itself at about 3 mph 15 feet ahead of him. Completely decadent but at least there is no human caddie. He throws his dog's s*** in my trashcans but at least it is in a bag. I hope this "social distancing" crap is over soon because it is bugging the crap out of me. [:D]

BTW, does anyone know where I can order Claymore mines? Somebody stole all of my Asian pears last season and I want to stop it.

Here in sunny old Englandsville the Covidiots (although I could think of some better names.....) defy instructions to stay at home. Two nurses (aged 39 and 36 died yesterday). The Government asked people, in their name, to stay at home but it seems some people are far, far too important to listen to advice designed to protect the NHS from being swamped, save lives (including their own) and get through this thing as quickly as possible.

As I've said many times before, this sort of thing brings out the very best in people... and the very worst. Lets hope these ******* ***** don't catch the virus eh?

Excerpt from the overhyped DC article in the Stamford Advocate:

"WASHINGTON -- Roughly one in every seven District of Columbia residents could get infected with coronavirus, according to projections Mayor Muriel Bowser cited Friday, which show the pandemic hitting its peak in the nation's capital early this summer and then gradually receding.

"The grim estimates came as the number of covid-19 cases in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia sailed past 5,000 on Friday morning, and the total number of fatalities climbed past 100.
Bowser, a Democrat, said a model on which city officials are relying estimates about 93,000 people could contract covid-19 in the city, a cumulative figure over the course of the public health emergency. The projection includes people who have been infected and have recovered."

Canoerebel -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 2:52:34 PM)

Golf courses and state parks remain open in Georgia. People are encouraged to exercise while maintaining social distancing. That makes sense, at least in areas like where I live.

My mountain biking is mostly on dirt roads, but the past two days, one short leg has taken me by a local public golf course. The parking lot has been the fullest I've ever seen. The weather has been gorgeous, so people are remaining active. Good for them.

In my area, I haven't seen anyone doing anything questionable. My wife has seen one - a lady coughing repeatedly in a grocery store.

Fauci throws down the gauntlet and shocks the genteel epidemiological community by accusing the Chicoms of a "delay in transparency" [X(]

He's being far too polite. Unless the CCP cellphone was discharged or the mail was lost most people would call this "lying"

quote:

During an interview broadcast on Friday’s “PBS NewsHour,” Coronavirus Task Force member Dr. Anthony Fauci stated that without China’s “delay in transparency” on the coronavirus, “other countries would have maybe been more quick on the trigger to try and inhibit travel from China to their country.” Fauci also stated that nothing “would have prevented the spread of this virus.”

Fauci stated that in “early January…it became clear that what the Chinese had claimed originally, that this was just a virus that jumped from an animal reservoir to a human, and wasn’t being transmitted from human to human, well, it became very clear pretty quickly that that was not the case. … And when the numbers started coming in as to what the morbidity and the mortality was, it was during that period in early to mid-January that it became clear to me that this was not just another SARS, it wasn’t another MERS, or Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.”

He added, “I don’t think anything would have prevented the spread of this virus. Once it emerged into society, with its capability of efficient spread and morbidity and mortality, that was it. But what could have been different…is that, if we had known that this was highly transmissible early on, when it was just in China, I think other countries would have maybe been more quick on the trigger to try and inhibit travel from China to their country. … So, that delay in transparency, I think, likely had an impact on what I just said, the awareness that this could seed the rest of the world.”

Moltrey -> RE: OT: Corona virus (4/4/2020 3:57:14 PM)

The Chinese kinda remind me of a scene with Robert Duvall in Joe Kidd (great movie btw). He (Frank Harlan) and his thugs stop at a Mexican woman's (Helen Sanchez) house who they suspect of supporting Luis Chama, the man he wants dead.

After rousting around her house and Lamarr finding her gun stash, Duvall finally asks her, "What do you think, honey?" (paraphrased)

Helen Sanchez' reply to him is "I think you are going to do what you want".

About the only thing I can say with certainty about the Chinese is that they missed the last (industrial) revolution; and they will do everything within their power to direct and own the next.

I altered your post slightly. I have lots of Chinese friends, indeed loved ones, and there is a big difference between that communist government and the vast majority of people who are Chinese. [8D]

I've looked at all articles I can find that relate to this story. I haven't seen one yet that takes anything out of context. Most give a good paragraph of his speech verbatim.

This is one that has a short piece noting that this evidence was out there for some time, and most places around the world and in the states were acting on it. (my bold)

In Georgia, where at least 154 people have died of COVID-19, Republican Governor Brian Kemp on Wednesday told residents to prepare for a shelter-in-place order beginning on Friday. Governor Kemp’s announcement came weeks after medical professionals warned coronavirus infections would explode across Georgia without strict social distancing measures.

Gov. Brian Kemp: “What we’ve been telling people, from directives from the CDC, for weeks now, that if you start feeling bad, stay home. Those individuals could have been infecting people before they ever felt bad. But we didn’t know that until the last 24 hours. And as Dr. Toomey told me, she goes, 'This is a game changer.'”
In fact, a report in The New England Journal of Medicine published in late January warned asymptomatic people can spread the coronavirus, and the finding has informed public policy worldwide for weeks.

The mistrust of the press has dire consequences right now, as we've seen with students ignoring warnings and going on spring break, people going about business as usual in some areas with direct local or state directives to stay at home, and in the brash and more subtle ways that people ignore protection and distancing.

Georgia happens to have some very dense concentrations of this virus around right now and it seems this statewide order is coming a bit late. They may not have known asymptomatic cases could transmit the disease, but as government leaders who can influence life or death for millions of people, they should have. I hope that people have been paying attention to the media, the warnings, and doing this themselves. The travel map on the left below does show that some were not over the past week (darker indicating more movement).
