Timotheus -> Declare WAR... on misspelling (3/19/2020 1:45:34 PM)

I have read a lot of AAR and continue to read some ongoing ones (they are great fun to read).

The only tink I have to tak issuez with is constent mispelings of words, especielly of citiez, townz and bazez.
I am reading the epik grejyoy AAR and it is a glorious raed, but the mispalling of words espezialy of bazez is hurtn me brain.

Maybe itz culturel - I wez burn in Warzav, Pulang.

I had no idea for half of the AAR which strategically important base he was talking about when he kept writing about

SCOODRA

Greyjoy is an Italian lawyer.

I abhor my errors in spelling. But a little miss spelling things never hurt anyone. As long as you can understand the message, that is what is important.

The base name is Socotra which is Omani, if I remember correctly. A nice place to put long ranged Nells to interfere with reinforcements.

Yup, it took me a few pages to understand that by Scoodra he meant Socotra.

Never have enough misspellings to shake a spear at.

pontiouspilot -> RE: Declare WAR... on misspelling (3/20/2020 12:23:57 AM)

Remember that in recent times anything that gets "war declared on it" is pretty much guaranteed a good run....drugs, terrorists....(god pls don't let Trump declare war on corona virus!!)

Its funny Tim I had no problem reading your post. I don't pay attention to it much.

jdsrae -> RE: Declare WAR... on misspelling (3/20/2020 3:42:55 AM)

You better not read Cap Mandrakes AAR then!
A few of his best from memory: Bealzabab, Chilliconcarne

But we all Love Pulang!

While I agree that a certain amount of misspelling should be tolerated (especially from non-native speakers of English), frequent misspellings are VERY DISTRACTING. Misspellings interfere with communication, and that's the point of posting, isn't it? When placenames are misspelled, it implies a want of care on the part of the writer; it's really not that hard to open the game to find the proper spelling (except for Jodhpur, which is misspelled on the map). And really, how much effort does it take to proofread your post before you post it?

Scott_USN -> RE: Declare WAR... on misspelling (3/20/2020 5:09:14 AM)

If u R WORRID about grammars than well get a life.

RangerJoe -> RE: Declare WAR... on misspelling (3/20/2020 8:40:56 AM)

Miss spellings are not a problem. It is when they are not literate is the problem.

ITAKLinus -> RE: Declare WAR... on misspelling (3/20/2020 10:03:12 AM)

For non-native speakers it's quite complex to get everything right, especially when we talk about of dozens and dozens of pages in an AAR.

I see that sometimes it can be bothering and I am definitely a grammar-nazi in my native language, Italian, but I don't expect non-native to speak correctly.

Also, sometimes it's complex for native speakers to understand what it is to write in a different language. Indeed, many (most?) of the English native speakers they do speak only English and therefore there isn't such a first-hand experience of how it looks like to use a foreign language.

For example. I am Italian. I live an "English-speaking life" at work and with my partner (she's Czech). And in my workplace I usually have to speak in French as well.
It happens to make dumb mistakes. Just as it happens to make completely hilarious sentences without realising (I have so many anedocts regarding that... Starting with one of my last ones: "warehouse" pronounced in a weird way so that it looked like "whorehouse" [:D][:D][:D])

Also, please take into consideration that people (or, at least, me) tend call places in their own way for a matter of simplicity. I call Bacolod in the Philippines, "Baclod". No way I will ever spell it correctly, it's just stronger than me because I call it "Baclod" in my mind and now it's stuck there.

Or "Chihkiang". Dear god, I keep calling it "Chikiyoung" and there is no way I can change that. I know it's wrong, but that's it.

Grazie. No capisci Italiano. But I do like the food and vino!

Czech Budweiser is the only kind of Budweiser that I like.
