Your description is quite limited.. It is hard to help with this.. 😉

SO basically in the scenario you have to protect a p3 from soviet interception while the p3 exercises freedom of navigation exercises in international waters.so i send up 7 F-14 tom cats for escort. Aim 54 aim 120 and aim 9m. as soon as the mig 31s are in shooting range they fire missles and there is only two of them at the moment. my jets fire Aim-54 i miss and they knock to F-14 out. my question is why.the F-14 is equal to a mig 31 if not better.

There are so many reasons about your question of "my question is why". As you may know, spec of airplane does not decide the outcome of air warfare. There are so many factors which decide the victory and defeat.

You have 2 EA-6Bs in that mission. You need to use them... wisely. ALQ-99G is decent jammer at the time frame.

Also if you check Tomcats from USS Ranger, AAW armaments are different among squadrons. You need to launch proper airplanes at proper timing. This is 6 hr scenario, so consider to prepare some Tomcats (VF-1s) to have different arms.

You would know AIM-54 is good missile to hunt down even agile airplanes. But if you fire them maximum range, chance to hit will be greatly reduced for obvious reasons. So you need to check WRA to manage firing range. At the same time, if Russians fired R-37 from max range, you need to check which plane is being shot at and manually manage him to run opposite direction with AB on.

If you didn't played flight tutorial, I recommend to try it first. It is very good and helpful.

Hey SterlingD,

I did the re-design of this scenario by Mike Mykytyn for the release of C:MO.

You'll be very lucky if you get that P-3 back, for a start. Time and distance are very much against you here.

As exsonic01 mentioned there are a lot of factors involved, more than most new players are used to dealing with. Are you using OECM? Are you engaging at the absolute maximum distance possible with the AIM-54s (this is not a good thing)?

It is entirely possible to have a pair of MiG-31's--or MiG-21s or the Red Baron in a Fokker Dr.1--absolutely slaughter a group of Tomcats, with the right conditions. If they come in radar silent from behind and use IR AAMs, you won't even get a warning.

In the case of North Pacific Shootout they're using their radars and their WRA is set to be sub-optimal. Use all of the tools at your disposal (AEW, OECM, ELINT, LRAAMs, MRAAMs, SRAAMs etc) and your cunning and wit, and you'll wipe the floor with the MiG-31's. Just don't expect your aircraft to be invincible because they have a USN roundel, nor the enemies to be a bunch of goons because they have a red star on their aircraft.
