56ajax -> Axis Allies Rail Repair (4/13/2020 1:03:07 AM)

Advice please.

How do I get the Rum RR construction units and the Fins for that matter to independently repair the rails.

Do they have to be assigned to any special HQ? Do they have to be next to an undamaged rail to work?

Thx in advance.

I have owned and played the game for years and for the life of me cannot figure out how the construction battalions work, or whether they can be guided at all.

They just seem to appear and then just go and do stuff. You can send them back to HQ (or disband if you like) but if there are any other controls I'm not aware of them.

If you do nothing, the CBs of all nations (scores of them pop up eventually) will backfill your unrepaired rail anyway but I know of no way to direct them to where this would be of most use.

The only way I know is to put them in a HQ next to a rail and they will fix a rail they are sitting on. So that fixes one hex and most CBs remain idle.

Construction batallions for German, Rumanians and Finns all work the same way.

First thing, it's a patience thing, they will deploy slowly, and if HQ's don't move, it's better.

It depends on the command range of the HQ. So if they are in High commands they will repair far, if they are in corps HQ, they will repair up to 5 hexes. So corps HQ is not a good place for them, unless it's a dedicated corps HQ that you put on a railhead and leave there.

Best for Rumanians is in armies so they can repair further afield and not only in borders.

Best places for Germans is to have them in Army Groups or OKH and try to keep those HQ's further east.

The other thing is to use the German RHG HQ's as alternative FBD by giving them 4-5 construction batallions and parking them on railheads you want to repair.

Thx joelmar, I will try a few things.

The Rum CBs havent repaired anything since the FBD disbanded on T10, now at T22 (I get distracted by whats happening at the Front)

you also got to play with the Construction and Engineer Permanent Support Levels described in the updated manual at 7.7.3.3

One important thing to know is that construction units that are on map repairing rails don't appear in it's HQ's unit window "ATTACHED SUPPORT" list and don't count towards that support levels. So that means that an army can have any number of on-map construction units repairing rails and still keep 3 construction units on its "ATTACHED SUPPORT" list from flowing down to its subordinate corps HQ's. Army Groups can hold up to 16 in the same way. My preference is having the construction units in army groups because of that and also the long range they have. If you keep them at the limit of repair rail, they will repair around that spot in a wide arc.
