Propitious Crane -> RE: Carrier Battles - Successor to Carriers At War? (4/20/2020 11:52:01 AM)

Yes it does. I do wonder if you can edit the scenarios though. That was one of the better things about CAW, although one really irritating feature of the CAW mission editor was how much that could be automated had to be manually coded. For example, if you create a new carrier or airbase and assign squadrons to it, you have to manually type in the inner and outer strike limit ranges and times when those apply. As the ranges are known from the plane type in each squadron, and its day/night capability likewise, and dusk / dawn times are in the scenario setup, all those fields could surely be populated by looking values up from elsewhere. The same applies to things like whether surface formations are likely to fight or not. This is largely a function of whether they contain carriers, seaplane tenders or merchants, so again it could be default value based on task group composition. The single worst change made between the old DOS and Windows versions of CAW was that in the latter control of what aircraft flew CAP was taken away. If you have a carrier equipped with say 9 Sea Hurricanes and 12 Fulmars, you probably want the former flying CAP because short range and 4 x 20mm cannon, and the latter accompanying strikes because longer-range. You're as likely to find that you have no fighters with the range to accompany a strike, because you set CAP to 10/21 and the AI has assigned 10 of the 12 Fulmars to the CAP leaving you only the 9 Hurricanes, which can't reach the target. You Swordfish strike duly gets slaughtered and it's game over.
