I'm not quite sure how morale works. I know that corps do not demoralize, and I remember that defenders can gain morale when the attack is unsuccessful. However, I've noticed recently that even when the defender takes strength damage and the attacking corp is uninjured, the defending unit seems to get a substantial chunk of morale pretty often. Is this a bug?

Hard to say... generally a unit's individual morale is tied into its previous morale value factored by its strength and supply. If supply goes up, morale goes up, strength goes up, morale goes up etc.

It can also go up or down from national events as well, e.g. from country surrender and liberations during the turn.

If none of those factors apply it could be a bug, but I'd have to see a repeatable example to know for sure.

How could any of those apply to the simple act of the unit being attacked?

You are right, from direct combat they wouldn't, just trying to eliminate the case of coming back to a unit after a recalculation and seeing it go up and wondering why. But it looks like there was another report from direct combat so I will investigate further.
