MikeJ19 -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/20/2020 12:54:25 PM)

Soviet response

Not much activity by the Soviets yesterday in this area, but there are a lot of units moving in this direction.

German thoughts

2 Pz is likely two days, at least, from grabbing their first Obj (SLUCK). However, they have been facing much harder resistance and have made good progress. I have two fresh divisions that will soon be taking the lead. So, I need my lead elements to continue to create a hole for them to exploit through.

4 Army has captured their first Obj (PINSK) and will continue to push East.

In the rear, most of the Soviet units have been destroyed. More should go today. A lot of the German units fighting this battle are too slow to get back into the main war...

MikeJ19 -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/20/2020 5:48:33 PM)

Got caught up in the chase... skipped a day. Oh well.

Soviet response

Not much response, even though we are a week in. There is no real defence line, nor a coordinated plan. They are forcing their units directly into the hot spots.

German thoughts

I decided to take a look at how I am doing on my time line. I’m happy to see that I’m meeting the plan in the North. I’m not too bad in the South, but still a little behind.

I’m out running my supply line in the North. My lead elements are still okay, but it is getting dangerous. I will need to pause some of them soon. The situation is much better in the South, although it is not as high as I would like.

There is not enough rail repair capability to make that big a difference with the rail lines.

In the North,, I think I can capture a crossing of the Berezina River today. I might also be able to get a VP location in the high North.

In the centre, I think I will have to attack MINSK, to open up the main road. I can attack from both the North and the West – which is really good.

In the South, 2 Pz is gaining speed and with two fresh divisions taking over the lead things are going well. I’ve also been able to encircle and destroy many of the Soviet units, which helps ensure the supply line..

Farther South, 4 Army is advancing along the road through the Pripyat marshes. I am trying to get a bridge repaired to help move the forces more quickly.

The air battle is going well – very well, I have moved all the planes forward.

My rail repair is coming along very slowly.

MikeJ19 -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/21/2020 1:37:20 PM)

Soviet response

The Soviets had some reinforcements arrive – or I only just discovered – into the three crossing sites over the Berezina river. They are brigade size, but will mean that I have to fight for the crossings.

The Soviet forces near MINSK are in a position that I can exploit and surround.

German thoughts

Supply concerns are a big issue, with my lead elements receiving very little resupply at the moment. Luckily, they are not doing much fighting at the moment either.

The next two days are going to be focused on capturing MINSK and destroying the Soviet forces in that region. I need that road to help get supply to the forces in the North.

At the same time, I’m going to continue to push towards the Berezina river. I need to secure those crossing sites.

In the far South, I will continue to push east along the road through the marshes.

You seem to be making good progress. Out of curiosity how are you doing on victory points? What sort of Health numbers do your front line troops have? Mine always seem to be pretty bad, running in the red.

Tom,

I'm happy with my progress. I think a victory is in my grasp. Right now, the score is a draw - see below. However, I think that I will be able to get at least another 20 VPs, which will move that towards a Marginal victory - it will be close.

Also, you can see the status of six of my leading units. Most of them are now in an over extended supply situation. None should be suffering the consequences yet - as their proficiency remains good. I'm worried if they meet any real opposition that they will fold quickly... I do not have many units in the red at the moment - so that is good.

Have a good day,

MikeJ19 -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/21/2020 5:12:44 PM)

Soviet response

More Soviet units are arriving in the east. The Soviets around Minsk are almost encircled and some are cut off.

Looks like the Soviets will be defending along the Berezina River.

German thoughts

Supply concerns remain a big issue, with my lead elements receiving very little resupply at the moment. There is not much I can do to help this. I’m repairing the rail lines as quickly as I can. I would have been better off if I had picked one rail line to repair and put all my units on that.

The next couple of days will focus on capturing MINSK. As I have said, that will open up the supply route, destroy Soviet units and get me an Objective hex.

The push towards the Berezina river continues with Das Reich SS Div leading. They are itching to get into combat. They will likely run into the enemy today, but the first battle will likely not be until the next day.

In the South, the Soviet resistance has crumbled. However, it is one road so the advance is slow.

In the North, I’ve picked up some objective hexes, not sure if I can get any more, but I will try!

In the rear, I have one group of Soviet units that I need to mop up. They are a nuisance.

MikeJ19 -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/21/2020 6:13:10 PM)

The turns are pretty quick at the moment - not much combat, lots of moving units forward..

This may be the last turn...

That was fun - I got a significant victory. One more day and I might have gotten an overwhelming one.

tcarusil -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/21/2020 10:42:39 PM)

Congratulations! I've never been able to do that well. I have no doubt it has something to do with my inability to keep my units from running in the red. I'll have to give this one another go.

MikeJ19 -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/21/2020 11:16:49 PM)

Tom,

Thanks. It was a different type of battle. I think the key is to avoid combat - especially frontal attacks - as much as possible. It was fun.

Have a good day,

MikeJ19 -> RE: Road to Moscow - Crossing the Border (5/21/2020 11:53:18 PM)

AAR

What did I do right?

Initial plan

Taking the time to develop a plan worked well. It helped me focus on the important things – getting East as fast as possible

Flow like water

With the exception of the first days attacks, my units avoided direct combat a lot. Instead, my lead elements flowed around the Soviet units like water flowing down a hill flows around rocks.

Adapting

On D+3, I was thinking that I would avoid MINSK completely. That would have been a disaster. Realizing that MINSK was key to helping my supplies, I switched the plan and attacked MINSK from three directions. There were other times, where I modified my plan responding to the opportunities presented to me. For example, I left a Soviet fort in the South alone for the whole game – attacking it gave me no benefit, so I let it be.

Surround and destroy

I was able to use the mobility of my units to surround the Soviet defenders in many cases. Using HQ units, and other non-manoeuvre units to help encircle Soviet forces made it much easier to destroy them.

Maximizing rounds in a turn

I was able to get four to five rounds of combat in on many turns. This was through careful management of my attacks so that I did not burn through the turn. On a couple of turns, I got more rounds then I could actually use. I did have at least one turn where a fail proficiency check cost me at least one or two rounds of planned attacks.

What could I improve?

Unit Cohesion

Very quickly into the battle I had no idea of where most units and their HQs were. It did not really hurt me in this battle, but it could have. I need to work on this better.
One issue I have always had with TOAW is that the higher level HQs have little effect and it is really hard to see who is in what formation – big picture. I could not tell you where the four different armies ended up. Yes, the two main pushes came from the Pz groups, but mixed in there were units from the other two Armies.

Rail repair

I thought it was a good idea to split up the rail repair units at the outset – bad idea. Instead of getting one line up right away, I was slowly repairing multiple lines. This cost me a lot of supply points as none of the lines were getting repaired. If I had to do it again, I would concentrate on one line in the centre and have all the units working on it.

Last thoughts

This was a great game (Thanks Rob). I was not sure until about turn 9 that I was going to be able to win. It was not until turn 11 that I had a lead.

I have said it a couple of times, but it was an interesting challenge – pushing East fast enough to get to the objectives while destroying lots of Soviet units. I think that some of the Inf Divisions could not have made it to the objectives even if there was no enemy.

I had a blast!

On to SMOLENSK!
