MrsWargamer -> Board or digital? (5/14/2020 9:01:40 PM)

On the basis that you had a reliable human adversary at your disposal, which would you prefer, board game or digital game, on the understanding, you would both be in the same room?

There are a lot of great computer games indeed, but, I guess I'm showing my roots. I would rather push cardboard.

With the end of the world approaching and access to electricity which will be more and more complicated, I suggest board games. [:D]

wodin -> RE: Board or digital? (5/14/2020 11:02:06 PM)

Obviously depends on the game😁

I would love to play Upfront f2f.

Ostwindflak -> RE: Board or digital? (5/14/2020 11:20:48 PM)

Board game. Something special about being able to share a good scotch, conversation, and light hearted "rule book lawyering" with a pal while playing a familiar classic or learning a new game.

Precisely, but make it a real sour gin and tonic.

Twotribes -> RE: Board or digital? (5/15/2020 12:36:32 AM)

I gave away all my board games to Chicken he said he could find a home for them where they might be used.

The problem with pushing cardboard and rolling dice is when you have cats/kittens around . . . [:@]

On a sad note, they just cancelled the World Board Gamers Championships In Seven Springs, PA due to Corona Virus. I live in the area, if any of you do, this is a must go. I used to be just a wargamer until I started going to this. They have wargames, lots of them, but you can expand your mind into non-wargames (Terraforming Mars, etc..,), it makes your gaming addiction even worse.., which is great!

And if you like to get drunk and eat unhealthy food - this is heaven.

That stinks that it's cancelled. I'll have to look it up to see where that is. I never went to one, do they help new players in these type of settings with the games?

warspite1 -> RE: Board or digital? (5/15/2020 12:14:18 PM)

Has to be digital. Its not just the time, its not just the space required but its also the poorer eyesight.

I would love to play World In Flames over the table top but it would be a pain trying to read the counters and the constant switching between long and short sight that would make my eyes hurt after about 10 minutes.

Digital is not perfect of course - look at WITP-AE or Aegod games, but many digital games allow for faltering eyesight. Matrix World In Flames in particular has done a great job in that regard.

When going back to that game after time away, I really appreciate the zoom in capability most of the game offers (there are a couple of exceptions).

Gilmer -> RE: Board or digital? (5/15/2020 12:21:19 PM)

Unfortunately, my only experience with board games that I actually played against real people was Monopoly, Life, and Sorry. I enjoyed playing Yahtzee and Spades with my siblings, as well. We also played the card game "Milles Borne", I think that was how it was spelled, and also Rook. I had more fun playing the card games with them, and Yahtzee.

I OWNED the game Flattop, but never played it with anyone else. Unfortunately, that is no longer with me to even play.

I recently asked my brother if he would play a board game and he tentatively said he would. I described some of the games I saw on "Shut Up and Sit Down's" Youtube channel and he seemed semi-interested.

KingHart -> RE: Board or digital? (5/15/2020 4:47:46 PM)

I do prefer board games, but a serious lack of time means PC only for now.

Michael T -> RE: Board or digital? (5/15/2020 9:18:03 PM)

Most certainly cardboard.

demyansk -> RE: Board or digital? (5/15/2020 9:25:24 PM)

Gilmer, check out some of the Solitaire games from GMT. I think you might find some of them well made. I am playing the Uboat game The Hunters.

Depends on the attractiveness of the opponent? Maybe? Am I allowed to say that?

That would depend upon the opinion of any significant others.

Well let's be honest here. If Jenna or Alison came around to the house one day and said, "look warspite, I know your eyesight is not the best but we are really looking to get into World In Flames Collectors Edition and would like you to help us learn the game", then yes I'm sure I would struggle through with cardboard as best I could.....

For me it depends on the game. If practical I would prefer the board game. However, the more complicated game gets the tougher it gets to play as a board game. Having thousands of counters on huge maps is fun, but if the rules are complicated the game will slow down to a crawl. World in Flames is about as much as I can deal with as a board game.

Playing a computer game with the opponent on his computer in the same room can be quite fun.

Cardboard??? You'd think Mrs. W would break out the good china for illustrious guests.

Hehe, actually, I'm likely unscrupulous enough to use psychological warfare on my opponent.

The right blouse can be very distracting.

No she would be okay - George Clooney would probably pop round at the same time to ask her if she wanted a game of Kerplunk....

Kuokkanen -> RE: Board or digital? (5/16/2020 6:23:35 PM)

Hmm... I can take a tablet along with bunch of games easier than a BattleTech game box, Army Transport box, and stack of record sheets and hard-cover rule books. And that is what I have done more often as of late. Doesn't matter either way if I don't get anyone to play [:(]

While you are there Gilmer, if you are identical to the erudite American on You Tube can I thank you for somehow breaking through my Neanderthal like brain and mental block to understand (I think!) the Ageod systems in Rise of Prussia/30 Years War etc.

About a decade later than the rest of the world I am just about to order one of the above titles.

You have a gift for clear explanation.

Cheers

Ian

Same here, I like the interaction from in-person OTB play.

Having the computer nearby, to help explain to new flesh how the game can play out,
is very useful for garnering interest.

I think much about "cardboard, or digitized?" and I always wind up with, "Why not both?"

Anyway, just thought I would throw in there on that.
Have a great gaming day!!

Yes, I'm the same guy. Thank you for your compliment! I do these videos to hopefully learn something myself, but primarily to help others learn about the game.
