cward -> Observations on SPWAW 5.3 from an old SP1 hand (7/2/2001 9:06:00 PM)

I have been having alot of fun getting to know my old Friend Spanther again.. Its been a long time, and boy how he has grown! I started up a long campaign to get a feel for whats new and to revise my tactics.. I did a Belgian,French,Polish thingee .. mostly infantry at this point. to get a feel for things.. In SP1 it seemed to be very important to get your mix of inital troops correct.. As if you needed more infantry you couldnt change armor to infantry and vice versa.. I like very much that you have the option to change to whatever sort of unit you choose. (well except for that coastal battery thing, I dont get that one) something that I noticed in SP2 that I didnt in 1 was infantry mobility could be very valuable. Because in SP1 units could ride on tanks, mobility wasnt much of an issue. Halftracks on SP1 were just light mobile MG platforms for me. Now in SPWAW Mobility seems to be much more important, owing to the fact that infantry is much more difficult to destroy. I can see the value of going with a motorized infantry group in the beginning. Another observation is that artillery seems to work now. Larger artillery seems to have proper effect in casualties and supression. I now see the usefullness of having artillery in your core. A group of Nebelwerfer teamed with an ammo supply unit can be really amazing thing. A large group of artillery firing TOT on advancing lines is really a fearsome thing to behold (as it should be!) Large calibre SP guns seem to be the way to go also, 2-3 Stug33b's can really break up an enemy line.. The splash damage effects are incredible also.. That teaches them to bunch up like that! Direct fire smoke seems to be much more important. Imagine my surprise when I upgraded to all PzIVf2's to find out they didnt have smoke. Sure makes those bofors guns really annoying when you cant blind them.. Pzing! pow! KLANG! hey quit that thats annoying! Overruns are awesome.. Nothing like rolling up an artillery battery with a charging tank! Especially nasty if the enemy doesnt have proper AT kit! Melee is bloody.. as it should be, But ads proper atmosphere. I enjoyed watching my elite Scout group duke it out with some legionares. URK! AAAAAGH!! Must be HitlerJugend! Aircraft seem to not be working much though.. after 16 strafing runs on infantry led to them Mg'ing my tanks again and again (thank gott that they didnt drop their bombs!) I think I have given up on them, well at least if there is no armor about. Level bombers? Whats everyones verdict.. It sounded great I spent 400pts or so to get them only to have none of them arrive.. seems expensive gamble to me. well thats it for now.. would love to hear everyones thoughts on the matter

You have to plot when and where level bombers will arrive and on what turn at the deploy phase at the start of the game. Thanks for your comments! Its greatly appreciated

Did the same thing myself a couple of times: take a 'too quick' look at the unit specs while on the upgrade screen...replace an AFV cuz I see that its armor and fire control are improved but fail to notice it doesn't have the smoke discharger its predecessor had. I can picture the crew screaming at the driver when they get in a tough spot...and him frantically looking through the 'owners manual'

Just to compare I re-installed SP1 last night. It is hard for me to imagine all of the work it took for Matrix to get from there to SPWAW 5.3. Love melee, overruns, the freedom to change core units, fwd obs, engineer functions(laying mines in game is cool), two player network play rocks. Thanks matrix

Paul, my friendly fighter air support has taken to attacking my troops exclusively as well. You might want to check to see what's up here.
