Thanks. It's a battle/campaign that more people should know about. It had important tactical, operational and strategic consequences.

Wow, that is a long paper, looks well worth reading.

Indeed. A study of this campaign also evidences for all the world to see everything that was wrong with Japanese military thinking in WWII; the hot-headed Japanese officers and Gekokujo, the lack of sensible planning, the dismissive belief that the enemy was always inferior, the inflexibility of Japanese operational plans - all were in evidence here.

Fascinating and lively.

Now from the forewords , what would you think a nato commander of the '80 would have learned of this account to fight the red storm rising ?

My 0.02 cent : High ground, spartan morale, jedi command ability and tons of materials.[;)]

Nomonhan Leavenworth Paper is only one of a huge (did I mention huge) collection of online free (did I mention free) papers and books on a wide range of military history and doctrine. The webpage can be a little overwhelming and confusing. But spending a little time figuring it out is worth it. It has something for everyone interested in military history and military doctrine.

If the link doesn't work internet search Army University Press or CSI Press Publications

I just finished reading this account. A really good piece concentrating on a single Japanese battalion, filled with very brave soldiers, in a horrible place to fight.

Well worth reading.

I’ve just watched a new video on Mark Felton’s YouTube channel about White Russian soldiers in the Imperial Japanese Army. It seems that there were Russian soldiers on both sides during the Nomanhan campaign:

The Japanese had a division or two of ethnic Russians in their army.
