PanzerCro -> Operation Barbarossa (5/28/2020 9:16:11 PM)

Where should I concentrate bulk of my forces ? What is more important objective, Moscow or Stalingrad and oilfields in Caucaus ?

Bo Rearguard -> RE: Operation Barbarossa (5/28/2020 9:25:06 PM)

My guess would be to concentrate on a southern strategy approach. By taking out MPP objectives like the mines of the Ukraine and eventually the oilfields of the Caucasus. This way you are knocking out the economic props supporting the more political objectives like Moscow and Leningrad. Besides, the AI tends to fortify Moscow to the death, so it can take a long time to fall. The terrain is better for armor too.

great questions, i too would like to see the answers

Depends, what's the defense like, what's your plan?

I find the making the bigger push through the Ukraine seems to be much more profitable in the long run. Because there is no stacking of units allowed in this game approaching Leningrad and Moscow can be a tough slog. The route is constricted with lakes and swamps so any numerical superiority you might have there doesn't help you much. You often have to slow down and rotate burnt-out units to the rear because the ground there is so favorable to the defense. The area is mostly marshes and forests which do lousy things to your HQ supply radius.

Down south on flatter ground the HQ supply lines stretch further, especially if you can park one of them in a major city. Plus, you have the Rumanians and Hungarians starting nearby to help. There are national morale objectives along the way to grab like Kiev and Dnepropetrovsk which can help too.

Xsillione -> RE: Operation Barbarossa (5/28/2020 11:07:39 PM)

South gives you mines and oil, north cuts the UK convoy, middles gives you nothing. Also the South gives a route to Iran, that also gives you more income and takes it away from your enemies. But of course, your and the enemies deployment will change everything, as well as small differences and luck, a good run in the center can lead good results, if the enemy don't react fast, encircling moscow has huge benefits, and can lead to a fast victory, even if you cannot take the city itself.

ElvisJJonesRambo -> RE: Operation Barbarossa (5/28/2020 11:57:57 PM)

I'd certainly agree that Leningrad or Saint Petersburg is a tough trail. Supply isn't great post Smolensk nor Stalingrad. Rails are best in the South. Time weather attacks. The Cookie Cutter players buy all Tanks & MechUnits, head for Moscow.

PanzerCro -> RE: Operation Barbarossa (5/29/2020 8:28:06 AM)

Thanks for advices. I think I will go south route, but after Stalingrad I will turn north...Iran, from what I saw on YT, is defended only by one garrison unit, so once when Africa Korps arrives it should handle easily.

fluidwill matrix -> RE: Operation Barbarossa (5/29/2020 1:03:55 PM)

South tends to have more turns of good weather too.

Yeah, that's another other plus. Your bombers can fly more often. [8D]

Regarding Sevastopol and the Crimea which you pass along the way, I don't put much effort into taking it. There is typically a Soviet corps inside the fortress there. I usually just plant a Rumanian Army on the city's doorstep to keep it penned in and move on. It's a sideshow. You're much better off concentrating your assets on Rostov and if you can turn the corner there the opportunities to spread out and capture Stalingrad widen rapidly. Sevastopol can be left to wither on the vine until the Soviet Union surrenders and frankly, the Soviet Black Sea Fleet based there tends to be rather irrelevant.

Actually, I have bad experiences with not taking Sevastapool. Soviets usually launch amphiobious attack from there to re-take Oddessa or even to take one of two coastal Romanian cities. Yes, I know it is not that big deal, but still you need to re-send few of corpses to deal with it and it takes turn or two.

Yeah, I've seen that amphibious spoiling attack happen too. The problem is it only works once. [:D] In the next game I left garrisons at Black Sea ports like Odessa and Constanta in Romania and the invasion gambit wasn't repeated. I always try to take Kerch in Crimea too, so that the Russian unit in Sevastopol has no outside support. The problem for the Soviets at Sevastopol is they really don't have room or a supporting HQ to push out of there with. Conversely, that lack of adjacent hexagons is what makes it difficult to take it without massing a lot of artillery and air assets maybe better used elsewhere. If the unit inside isn't destroyed in one turn it just replaces it's losses since Sevastopol is a primary supply source. It can become a tar baby.

Treefrog -> RE: Operation Barbarossa (5/29/2020 6:43:51 PM)

As Germany I like to capture Sevastapol and the other Russian Black Sea port which eliminates the need for four+ garrisons on the coast. Four garrisons at at 47 mpps each is 168 mpps. It is unlikely your airforces can keep up with retreating Russians so just use them two turns at that point. You can start with medium bombers flying from Rumania to reduce fort level on the turn of the invasion. Once the fort level is reasonably low the tactical bombers do apretty good job killing factors which minimizes the distraction of routing infantry/armor units onto the peninsula. The ones that reduce the city can then move to take
Rostov from behind. [:D]
