The box did contain a lot of plain black counters with white numbers, which my daughter has had great fun with.

Oh yes, those were the "hit" counters. There was a whole counter sheet devoted to those. My copy of the game is long departed but more than a few of those lingered around for years in various storage trays.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (6/1/2020 5:21:50 AM)

I was wondering what those were. Those things have ended up all over the apartment. There might even be some left.

Cheers,
CB

Try the second edition, its more expensive and more depth and details into it, but also much more expensive too. The only problems is that you will need to find a player or two to enjoy it.

Here is a picture of CoachZuck and I about to start a game many years ago. We started a few times, but never finished.

I remember when I was in High School, my mother was going into NYC for the day and I asked her to go to SPI and buy the game for me. She said that when she asked for it, they told her that it was a very complicated game and she replied that her son is very smart. Not sure who was right in this case...

Wow amazing pic. Thanks for sharing it. Now that makes me nostalgic!

Such is often the fate of those of us who actually enjoy these complicated simulations. But there is Vassal. And there will be conventions in future once this pandemic runs its course. Keep hope alive!

spence -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (7/15/2020 1:57:02 AM)

I owned both games at one point or another. Would have had one of the first of the SPI game except that my ship got deployed and it took so long to catch up with the ship that SPI sent me another complete game in the interim.

In either case one has to leave it set up to play it and certainly during the course of a single weekend (such as at a convention) neither could be played into 1945. Both were beautiful to admire though.

Torplexed -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (7/15/2020 2:25:09 AM)

Well, if you didn't have the time or space or the inclination to read a voluminous rule book, there was always Avalon Hill's Victory in the Pacific. Admirals...grab your dice and Yahtzee your way to victory.

Chris21wen -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (7/15/2020 4:35:41 AM)

There's also a magazine game made by SPI called USN which is smaller but just as complicated. It's how I got into wargaming around 1980 and still have it.

I played Victory in the Pacific a few times. I also played the Atlantic one as well.

If I ever tried to play any of the monsters {Atlantic Wall, Terrible Swift Sword} the cat would win.

My dad picked me up from a library one night that was open to gaming. He almost single-handedly sank the Russian Fleet that had been maneuvered too close to the front door.

Just wish it had better naval rule set, just too plain and simple. I had something made up, just havent publish it yet.

I think 2 different board games are being discussed here :-) SPI's War in the Pacific and Victory Games Pacific War - both great games that I played a lot of solitaire due to lack of rural opponents

Yeah, we are certainly discussing two monster games at once here. I think the OP edited his post to indicate he meant the title on the left.

[image]local://upfiles/37092/F50E8BAB47274301AA0EB736320BDC11.jpg[/image]

The second edition of War in the Pacific was released a few years ago. I played the first edition a bit because a friend had both the space and the plywood sheets (it IS a monster).

Nowadays I would go for Empire of the Sun. Much more manageable.

I’ve got the one on the left, from Victory Games.
Mint condition, unplayed and unpunched, which I bought on ebay around 7 years ago.
Used to have War in the West, from SPI, which I made a terrible mistake of selling it.

I’m still hoping to get a hold on SPI Campaign for North Africa....then my dream will be fulfilled.

Not sure if you can see the link below, but this the one i have and also have the older series you guys mention above

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22843/war-pacific-second-edition

I got this one from ebay some years ago for 250, rarely been used. I think the retail price is around 350-400.

Shellshock -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (7/17/2020 2:56:22 AM)

I have to admit some of the reprints and graphic reboots of these old war games are quite sharp. Thanks to computers, printed graphics and components have improved since the day of misaligned maps and half perforated counters. Considering the price sometimes I guess they better be.

However, since many first editions of these titles are still marking time on my basement back shelf, I won't have time for these either, pretty as they may be. [;)]

Aksully -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (7/17/2020 1:57:34 PM)

I've really enjoyed this thread with all the great memories of playing all these games back in California a long long time ago. Amazingly I've kept most of them. Some in better shape than others. Not sure what the market is for these classics today. But may start going through them to make sure they are as complete as possible and see if anyone has the need?

I was pretty excited when I found Carrier Battles for Guadalcanal that was recently released in June. It's a beautiful board-like PC simulation which comes real close to capturing the feel of classic naval style games. At my age with arthritic fingers it sure beats placing stacks of counters!! :) I'm really enjoying playing this game which so far is solitaire only but sounds like there may be a PBEM adaptation coming in the future. But the solitaire version is challenging with a robust AI.

I just wish WITP AE had a simplified game option for supply and such. I managed to get through it. But I just didn't enjoy it as much as playing WITP board game back in the day. Just me.

It just reminds me so much of these games which were for me, more like playing chess than playing a "game"! This thread has been so fun to follow. Thanks all!

Very sharp. [8D] I wonder if they could have pulled that off back in the days of mechanical offset printing where art literally had to be cut and pasted on a layout board. It's a good thing Nato symbols were always so simple graphically.

I've seen some nice new counters proposed for the 1977 title Victory in the Pacific mentioned above.

Now THEY are nice counters! Only slight niggle is the ships look like they've been shortened by making them taller...

I’ve placed my order for Pacific War: The Struggle Against Japan, 1941-1945. It had a P500 number and I see that that current order number is 1820.

I’m wondering what the timeline is going to be to get this game in my hands.

stretch -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (7/17/2020 10:57:22 PM)

Mark Herman kicked his blog back on and indicated that his part of the work will be done by the end of this year, beyond that there are too many variables to predict but IMHO sometime in 2021 is a good bet given that its the fastest P500 ever, to my knowledge.

Relevant blog post link, which also has more information on the new version.

CaptBeefheart -> RE: OT: Board game War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 (7/20/2020 1:58:23 AM)

I used to play Victory in the Pacific and Victory at Sea (Atlantic and Med theaters) a lot in the olden days (late 70s, early 80s). I even had an issue of General which had a way to combine the two games.

I pre-ordered Campaign for North Africa back in high school and waited maybe an extra year for it to arrive (slow development). I used to dabble with the air side of it a bit. I think I donated that to a Goodwill at some point. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Cheers,
CB

Quite an expensive title if you can find it. IIRC I did once, but determined it was too much for a game I'd probably never play. Maybe I'll have a change of heart at some point.
