dasboot1960 -> BARGES! (6/2/2020 9:45:00 PM)

So here I am wanting to move some Japanese troops from Hankow to Ichang. 36 barges, docked, infantry unit in combat mode (I've cycled through the other modes too) Lots of units in combat mode in Hankow, NONE show up as eligible to load. I've also tried the barges in landing craft mode. Any help out there?

Q-Ball -> RE: BARGES! (6/2/2020 10:16:44 PM)

Are your units RESTRICTED? Meaning, if you look at the HQ, is there an (R) in the name? If so, that's the problem. Restricted units can't load onto a ship

They are going to have to walk

Jorge_Stanbury -> RE: BARGES! (6/3/2020 12:35:44 AM)

and you can't move by river to Ichang

dasboot1960 -> RE: BARGES! (6/3/2020 9:26:28 PM)

Jeez. Like they taught me in cub scouts... owa tagoo siam. . . completely spaced on them being restricted. Sounds like they cant go anyway. I wish I had remembered how vulnerable it is at the start. Thanks guys!

You can transport them by plane. At least lighter devices.

Thank you inqistor. My 'real' air transport groups are currently busy.. but I am trying to get some Theresas up there

+1 - even if they were not restricted units

The Jangtze was navigable for river craft past Chungking. Ichang was and still is an important river port. In stock scenarios you can't move by river to Ichang, but in some mods you can - and even have some river gunboat actions!

You made my day LST!. I haven't tried any of the mods, but I feel better about imagining the possibility... despite the impossibility

The difference in color between the navigable section of the river and the impassible lake/channel beyond Hankow/Wuchang is very subtle. Most scenario mod designers don't fool too much with the maps because you need to edit the map data file, not just the map art. Looks like RHS is one mod that did.

dasboot1960 -> RE: BARGES! (6/7/2020 5:25:26 PM)

Turns out all was lost anyway. I need to make an indelible note about the early vulnerability of Ichang. I am sure it is easily defensible if one just remembers. The emperor now insists upon redress.

In stock, the Chinese have strong forces in three of the hexes adjoining or one away from Ichang. It is nearly impossible for the IJA to get enough troops there to defend it. And the Chinese are in wooded/wooded rough hexes so air attack is not very effective. Looks like the best Japanese strategy is to abandon the base immediately on turn one and gather enough forces to take it back later - or leave it to the Chinese since it is not particularly valuable in location or industry.

Yes, the difference in color is very subtle on stock maps and the map mods I know of. No idea how RHS handles this but I have added a deeper blue for the navigable portions in my mod, as can be seen in the screenie above.

We are playing stock, but he didn't send his first attack in until Christmas/41, so I think I had time... I'd much rather be tying down 100+ Chinese while holding the city, but alas..
